Arizona Charlie...

I didn't have to travel to the Phoenix area to pick up Charlie Doodle. His Foster Mom's niece traveled to California on Thursday and I met her in San Bernardino to pick up Charlie.  What a difference, it's 90-miles to San Bernardino and over 350-mikes to Phoenix.  That would have meant a lot more gas as well as expense for a motel and meals enroute.  I am very grateful.

Charlie is a very nice boy but, has a problem with his left rear leg for which he has seen a vet in Arizona.  Sometimes he can put weight on it but often he cannot.  We have scheduled an appointment with Dr. Tony Chamberlain of Veterinary Surgical Specialists in Tustin, CA for Tuesday.  Dr Chamberlain is an excellent orthopedic surgeon who has saved the legs on many of our Maltese Rescue California dogs. 

Judy and I figured that since Charlie might need surgery in the near future to repair his leg, we would get him groomed and he took a trip to Ye Olde Poodle Parlor in San Marcos, CA where Maureen will make him look spiffy.  He is at the parlor right now and I will shoot a few pictures of him when he returns home.  The folks in the Poodle Parlor have been wonderful to our rescue and foster dogs.  That Is where we get Holly groomed and I fully expect Mr. Charlie to look great when he returns.

Charlie's leg is improving by the day.  We still give him metacam but, we are seriously considering reducing his dosage to every other day, rather than every day.

I am so glad to hear that Arizona Charlie's leg is improving.  Your chickens would not survive my dogs.  Even Ned, who is not prey driven will not leave the chicken coop alone when we visit my niece.

Charlie has been on his anti fungal medication for a week now and there seems to be  a definite improvement...

He puts weight on his left rear leg pretty consistently.

Charlie is intrigued by the chickens we have on our patio.  We are waiting for the weather to get a bit warmer and for the four chickens to get a bit older before we transfer them to their own house. The light is an infra red heat lamp which is the reason for the weird color in the pen.

The chicken house is in its own area fenced off from the rest of the yard and inaccessible to our dogs...

We plan to have the chickens free roam within their own fenced area during the day.  The hen house is inder mature oak trees which will provide shade and shield the chicken from high flying hawks.  The ground is several inches of leaves.

Oh Richard,  this is just the best news.  I am so happy for Charlie.  Dr. Cambridge is a wonderful caring vet who certainly went the extra mile for his patient.

HOORAY, HOORAY, HOORAY!!!  NO AMPUTATION FOR CHARLIE

Dr. Tony Cambridge of Veterinary Surgical Specialists Clinic in Tustin, CA, diagnosed Charlie's problem as a fungal infection which is somewhat prevalent in Arizona and the Central Valley of California.  Extensive blood tests confirmed that the problem is a fungus which can be treated with an anti fungal medication pill twice daily.

Dr. Cambridge went the extra mile and found a mail order pharmacy in the Arizona area that will supply the meds at a lower cost than local pharmacies.  He sent a prescription to that pharmacy and Charlie will be on his way to recovery soon.

We don't know how long Charlie will need to be on the meds (Dr, Cambridge states that it will be long term treatment) but, that's a LOT better than an amputation.
