Xylitol, an artificial sweetener used in gum and candy is toxic to dogs. It is now being added to some medications.

Recently this is a hot topic on alot of forums.  I found this link from one of them.  It is a list of products that contain Xylitol, although not comprehensive.

The only "human med" my dogs ever get is Pepto Bismol (once in a while).  I'll have to check that.  Thanks for the info, F.

Thank you so much for posting this. I have not had to give Jack OTC meds but I bet you anything I would have ended up giving him a yogurt with that sweetener in it. I had no idea about it being in mints, and things like that. I didn't even know that was something to worry about looking for. Thank you again.

There also have been some posts that some formulations of Rescue Remedy contains Xylitol.

I did post yesterday about some formulations of gabapentin having Xylitol.  All over the counter medications should be checked for Xylitol and I imagine we should be asking the pharmacists about all the ingrediants.  I am assuming that any medications we get from the vets do not contain Xylitol.

I think the seizure group is aware, I saw someone mention something about gabapentin (Neurontin) the other day.
