We flunked out as a foster for Sasha.  We cannot part with this darling dog and have adopted her...

We "think" that she may be a Jack Russel Terrier - Papillion cross.  I am curious as to just how accurate our guess as to her ancestry is and I would like to know for certain (not that it really matters).

There are quite a few doggie DNA test kits available on Amazon.com which run between about sixty dollars and ninety two fifty...  http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_16?url=search-alias%3Dpets...

Has anyone done a DNA from an Amazon kit?  I would like some recommendations...

Sasha is adorable in looks, and when you see her soul in those eyes,  I can see why you couldn't part with her.  Lucky her and lucky you.

Cheryl, I've heard these breeds mentioned as part of the ALD mix too. And that, as you said, Labrador Retriever was part of the origin of the minis as well as the standard size but that a miniature poodle was used instead of a standard. I think the breeding lines became pretty chaotic there for a while. That is partly what raised my curiosity about Tara enough to try a DNA test but as you can see it just caused more confusion! :(

Congratulations on being a failed foster -- I can see why you'd want to keep her.  I've been curious about DNA testing but since my ALD is a multi gen for so many generations, I thought the test results wouldn't amount to much.  Maybe I'll try one day for fun.

I thought ALDs were supposedly a mix of Poodle, lab (way far back), cocker spaniel, English spaniel, Irish water spaniel, and curly coated retriever (and more recently wheaten terrier). Where the heck did Puli come from :)

Oh well, the only ancestor I'm sure of is that Finn's paternal grandmother was (a backcross to) a standard poodle:)

I have no recommendations on DNA testing but Sasha is adorable.

Congratulations. I love that you caved in and kept her.  I have no experience with DNA testing, but I know sometimes they offer it at charity events around town here.  I am curious what the results show. I know a few dogs that I'd love to do this for. :)

Lynda, yes I suspect that she may have had a Puli infusion in her line at some point but since her breeder had no knowledge of it and she owns several generations of Tara's family herself, it shouldn't have been that high.  I've read that the ALD's can have up to 6 different breeds mixed in a some point too. It was primarily the amount of Puli genes that came into question with Tara, although her breeder was pretty adamant about the fact that there wasn't ANY.  I thought about having another test run just to see what would come up a 2nd time!  At this point I'm still looking for the Lab in my Labradoodle! LOL

Ricki and Tara - that test sounds like the results for an ALD to me.  They are supposedly cocker spaniel, puli, and miniature poodle. 1/2, 1/4, and 1/4 adds up.  But it can be diluted anywhere along the way.

We did a DNA test on Tara three or four years ago. We used the Wisdom Panel test.  The results were questionable and I spoke with a company rep about it. She explained that at that time their testing was most accurate when breed mixing was limited to only a couple of generations. In dogs such as Tara who is a multi-gen with numerous breed mixing over generations it was more difficult to get an accurate read. However, I see that they have made some changes in their testing options since that time so perhaps that worked out some of the kinks. Tara's results were 1/2 miniature poodle which should have been correct, 1/4 Cocker Spaniel which could be correct as her dad was a multigen Cockapoo, and the weird one was 1/4 Puli.  Here breeder said that wasn't possible but who knows... Anyhow, it was kind of fun and not that expensive and since it seems they have made some advancements it might be worth a try.

BTW Sadie is adorable and looks like a little sweetie. I can understand why you flunked!
