Having been cooped up in the house for 6 days with a small bout of pneumonia....on day #7 DerbyDoodle & I bolted for some freedom & retail therapy. But first in trying to keep with her training program since leaving Markay training ....I decided to meet DH for a quick lunch. She joined us outside at a local restaurant. Where she laid on the concrete like a perfect angel for apprx 40 min. This was our first time taking her to a restaurant since her "polite dog switch was flipped on by Liz, her fantastic trainer.
The prior time she was a handful!! Trying to lick up anything on the floor under the 4 tables near her. Just remarkable to see & experience the difference now!
This stop having been quite painless...we moved onto bigger things.
Costco awaited us.
And I will tell you I was not prepared for what ensued.
We entered easily enough, but once inside I had 2 women remark from a distance away how cute DerbyDoodle was. Then a lady and her elderly mother stopped me.... blocked & tackled me might offer a better verbal picture....for what reason you ask...for more info on DerbyDoodle's dog species, age, size, gender & of course her breeder. Then the elderly mother started complaining..about the fact that DerbyDoodle was from Orlando. How was her daughter going to get a dog from there?
While I was trying to answer the younger woman... her mother just kept shaking her head in disbelief That her daughter was considering adding another doodle to her household. I was trying to not be distracted by her mother's comments and was not paying attention to the swarm of people that began surrounding my "scooter shopping cart" (bad knees keep me from walking the football field of goodies at Costco)
Well, when the phones started flashing...I knew we were creating a scene...or a flash mob took over in the store. I never could imagine this happening....I had a dog for 14 yrs! A really adorable Maltese...no one ever stopped Us!!' ANYWHERE!!
This was getting out of hand & I was afraid management would get upset and ask us to leave!! And i had to get my lamb chops & paper towels!! There had to be at least 20 people and with all sizes & ages of kids with them
asking questions about her and snapping pictures of her
You would think she was Bengi or Lassie...everyone wanted to touch her...I kept saying " thank you for asking, but she's in training".
Thank goodness no one asked me for what!!
I was just overwhelmed and wanted no hands on my doodle!!
Finally, I was able to get back in the scooter..and make a polite get away ....this however did not deter some people from following me and again stopped me & asked questions about her & wanted to touch her.
OMD, I was absolutely thrown by these events and forgot half the things I came for. When we finally reached the car...I thought Great now we can cruise ....but a barking sound got our attention...it was some guy who apparently believes that's a great way to encounter a dog in a shopping cart. Same kind of scenario as inside, except he wanted to tell me all about his standard Poodle..I never imagined one puppy could create this kind of attention!!!
But back to the Dood...we started our adventure @ 11:30, it was now 2:30.....she never made a sound during the entire period. She actually handled all the chaos better than me. I texted Liz about our exploits and she commented that DerbyDoodle was going to be plenty tired when we got home....this was NOT the case!!
But I needed a Xanax....DerbyDoodle just required a drink of water
I think my DH has finally gotten his wish....I'm not going back to Costco any time soon!!
