As a former first grade teacher, I know that this program will make a difference in the reading progress of these lucky kids! These visits are a huge incentive for them to practice, practice, and practice even more!!! To encourage children to read in my classroom, I scheduled kids to read to the class. We called them "guest readers". As each individual became more proficient, everyone wanted to read to us. Their ability to read soared!! I can imagine the improvement when first graders actually get to read to a dog. No pressure, just fun! Next school year, I am planning to take my Oliver to the school that I formally worked at. I want kids to read to him. He has been doing therapy dog work at nursing homes and turns two this summer. Yea!. The first graders are very lucky. I think every school should have a program to help with reading!
