As a former first grade teacher, I know that this program will make a difference in the reading progress of these lucky kids! These visits are a huge incentive for them to practice, practice, and practice even more!!! To encourage children to read in my classroom, I scheduled kids to read to the class. We called them "guest readers". As each individual became more proficient, everyone wanted to read to us. Their ability to read soared!! I can imagine the improvement when first graders actually get to read to a dog. No pressure, just fun! Next school year, I am planning to take my Oliver to the school that I formally worked at. I want kids to read to him. He has been doing therapy dog work at nursing homes and turns two this summer. After reading the article that you posted, I'm very excited at the prospect of starting this new adventure! Thanks for sharing! Kathy (Ellie & Oliver)

Yea!. The first graders are very lucky. I think every school should have a program to help with reading!
