Holly graduated from Puppy Obedience Training at about six months. She learned all the basic commands, sit, down, come and stay (well - maybe not so great at staying). She also learned to walk on a loose lead.
However, Judy and I decided that Holly was not really ready for serious training because her attention span was not long enough. We decided, that since she was a pretty darn well behaved dog due to the puppy training; we would wait until her first birthday before we did any serious training.
Well, her birthday was on Christmas Day and it looks like waiting paid off. We have begun a training routine at home and Holly has been great at staying. We can walk off a distance and she will remain where she was placed until we release her with "O.K. Holly". It amazes us how smart and easily trained she is. It is a pleasure working with her and she also seems to consider obedience training as sort of a game. She loves to get rewarded with treats but seems also to enjoy being rewarded with praise. We always praise her and only occasionally add some treats to the equation.
Next Thursday we enroll in a training class to enlarge on our training. The class has an open enrollment and the instructor places the dogs in several categories according to the level of the dog. There are classes available in the afternoon which is nice for us retired folks and the most basic class starts first with more advanced classes at following intervals of about an hour. According to the description of the various levels, it appears that Holly will either benefit from entering either a level two or level three. That will, of course, be up to the instructor.
Level One is comprised of the following:
In this Level your dog will learn some of the basic behaviors needed to be a well behaved member of the family. Your dog will learn to pay attention to you even when there are distractions around. They will learn to sit, especially when they greet someone. They will learn the down cue, to wait at doors, leave it, and the first part of the come command and loose leash walking. Your dog will also learn to be touched and handled making them more comfortable about being groomed. Open enrollment (start any day you want).
Level Two:
In this level your dog will build upon the skills learned in level 1 (attention cue, sit, down, wait, leave it, off, come, handling, and loose leash walking) while adding several new commands like the stand and stay. We will ask more of the dog teaching them to listen to you around other dogs, people and toy distractions. Your dog will earn a Companion Dog Certificate for completing this level.
Level Three:
In this level we start working towards earning The Canine Good Citizen Test while adding more distractions to the skills learned in Level 2. We will teach you how to get rock solid sits, downs, and stays anytime and from any position. Your dog will learn some new useful skills like going into their crate on cue, learning the Formal front for competition obedience, distance work, and the beginnings of Heeling.
Level Four:
In this level we finish all the skills needed to pass the Canine Good Citizen as well as start teaching the foundation skills needed for competing in fun sports like Agility, Rally obedience, and Competition obedience. Distance work with sit, down, stand and send outs. Formal stays and recalls (come). Passing this level will also get you and your dog ready for Therapy Dog Work if you are interested in visiting nursing homes, schools, and hospitals. Your dog will earn a Great Dog Certificate upon completion of this level.
Level Five:
In this level your dog will start working on its off-leash skills while continuing to master heeling, the come command, loose leash walking for other people, and stays with major distractions. We will introduce moving commands, out of sight stays, distance work up to 40 feet and jump work.
Level Six:
Our Wonder Dog Level will be at competition level obedience. Your dog will master the skill of go-outs, drop on recalls, directional commands, and 3-5 minute out of sight stays. We will be taking this class on field trips to proof your dog’s skill level several times a month. Your dog will earn a Wonder Dog Certificate of completion.
Trick Classes:
One of our most popular classes. This class almost always sells out early. Think your dog should be in movies? Teach your dog to go to its mark, touch specific items, roll over, play dead, spin, wave, bark, turn on a light switch, get the newspaper, or bark on cue. Our trick class is fun for both handler and dog! Space is limited to 7 dogs. Call now and reserve your spot!
