I am in the basement on the computer as usual. DH is gone out and Cody (my grandson) is running around the house like a madman as usual. It was a typical evening. For those who don't know, Cody is autistic and non verbal. The TV down here is on and I am hard of hearing.

All of a sudden, I think I hear voices upstairs so I go up to take a look. There are 2 of my neighbors standing in my front hallway. I wondered what the heck was going on.

They informed me that a child came to my door selling chocolate bars and Cody opened the door but didn't say anything of course. Well out the door went both my doodles. The boy didn't know what to do so he ran next door to tell them what happened. I guess the 2 neighbors rounded up the dogs and managed to get them back in the house. (no collars or leashes) They were going to call 911 because they thought Cody was home alone.

I am in tears just thinking what could have happened. The "what if's" have me very shaken up.

Obviously, I have become too comfortable with the situation and even though I have an inside lock that Cody can't reach, I haven't been using it. I haven't had to use it in a long time but that just changed. Horrible things could have happened and it would have been my fault.

Linda, Somehow we all do this stuff. We were always so careful about locking our screen door but just this one time I came rushing in and ran to another room just for a few seconds ..... Suddenly missing our toddler son .......
We ran outside in time to see a concerned motorist escorting him and his big wheel back across the street. We lived on a hill and apparently he got ourside, got his bigwheel down the porch stairs and rolled down the hill and into the street. I am still kicking myself for that one and picturing the possible disasters and it has been almost 30 years.

Linda, DON'T beat yourself up. Every single one of us has gotten comfortable with certain situations, and it's human nature to think that things will be OK. The good news is that Cody is OK, your doodles are home safe, and you have some great, caring neighbors. The other good news is that we're all sending big hugs to you! Don't let it get you down!

I'm glad everything's ok. That what-ifs didn't happen, so this just gets to be a learning experience.

Linda don't beat yourself up. We all get too comfortable some times. When my oldest was 4 I had to put chain locks on the doors to keep her in the house. She slipped out of the more than once to visit her god parents who lived across the street. The "what if's" didn't happen so don't dwell on it.

I am glad it all worked out Linda. I know you were scared to death. At least your grandson and doods are safe and you can try to prevent something like this in the future.

I'm so glad that the dogs are back, and Cody is fine. You certainly have great neighbors.

I am glad everyone was OK. I take these "Scares" as reminder for me to pay attentions to something that I have been careless about...( Like my KFC Chicken scare...) Things worked out OK, and now we can prevent bigger thing from happening....

You have to believe everything happened for a reason. This scare may have changed how you do things and look at things, maybe you prevented something worse. Take good care and do NOT blame yourself!
