It was hard to choose the theme song for today's blog entry given the difficult subject matter, but I found two tracks that are particularly à propos: "Boys Don't Cry" by the Cure and "Emasculate the Masculine" by the Unicorns.
Now that I am starting to overcome the initial shock and trauma of my surgery, I can reflect upon the experience of the last few days without whimpering. So CLICK HERE for my unvarnished take on recent events.

Thanks, Lynda for sharing your perspective and for wishing Truffle well. He's hanging in there - another 6 days and his stitches will hopefully be removed (he managed to open his incision the other day).
Thanks, Jennifer, for your explanation. Most good breeders have a neuter/spay clause in their contracts where you cannot register a pet who has not been "fixed". Sounds like your breeder is on top of it. I guess I object to the term "castration" because growing up on a farm we "fixed" all male baby animals. Some questions about that also. And, I have to admit, I am pretty cautious about drugs. Hugs to Truffle from all the "males" at our house.
Hi, Lynda. Thanks for having a look at my post! I am aware of the different philosophies on when to neuter - if you clicked on the link to read the entirety of my blog, we were obligated by the breeder contract to wait to neuter until Truffle was between 9-14 months (the breeder was of the same opinion as your friend, BTW). We couldn't have done it sooner, even if we had wanted to. You're preaching to the choir when it comes to advocating that all pets should be fixed.
As for the term "castration," it's meant to be tongue in cheek and purposely sound more dramatic than it is (I used several different euphemisms for neutering in the post). And as for my mentioning drugs in response to Elizabeth's comment, it was not intended to offend in any way. "Truffle" was simply responding to "Bruin" in his own inimitable fashion. I've been blogging about Truffle since we brought him home last year and the entries are supposed to be a humorous, sarcastic and exaggerated look at what it's like to be a puppy from Truffle's perspective.
Castrated has a painful sound to it. You "castrate" big boys, but the clipping of the youthful is better referred to as neutering. All pets should be neutered or spayed and I always have boys because it is so much easier to neuter than to spay. Ready? Some people think you should wait until about 6 months old, but others do it while still with the breeder. My friend who is really into agility says you should wait until their bones are fully developed, so there is something to that. Wait if you like, but neuter at an early age. Drugs, Jennifer? I don't think so. Avoid them if at all possible. They are available, of course, but don't project your human desires onto your dog. Topical, snip, snip, cauterize, and done.
My condolences to you in advance, my friend. It's not fun. Make sure they give you lots of drugs.
Oh Truffle... I am going on the "chopping block" too, as soon as the vet says I am ready..REALLY? Is any boy really ready to have their "man berries" removed??
Feel better soon and keep up the good work of keeping your mom on her toes!! I know I am!!
