Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

When I got Yankee, it was just him and I for almost 2 years. I played with him every day. Now I have Finn and I am wondering if he is special. He can't catch a ball!!!!!
Is he still young (9 mos)and may learn later? Is it because I didn't spend one on one time with him?

Sometimes it's downright embarrassing. At home, I will bounce a ball and he jumps up in the air but nowhere near the ball. At first, I was in stitches but now I'm wondering if he is just special. I will even bounce it where it lands on his nose and he still doesn't catch it.

Of course both my doodles are special to me.

Peri is a month older than Finn and has just started catching a ball mid-air.....

Maybe he just needs you to show him how it's done. Have somebody throw the ball to you and catch it in your mouth.....then he should get the idea. (That visual is actually cracking me up right now).

Lucy doesn't give a crap about catching a ball or frisbee, but toss a piece of popcorn her way and she gets it midair everytime! Neither of our girls care about balls or frisbees. I'm guessing he is still just a little young and his eyesight is still improving.

you should work on him be throwing a ball in the air (not high) right in front of him at home and see if he can learn to catch it. I did this with Timbow and when he finally caught it he was so proud of himself! :)

Timbow is special too Linda! At the park, when I throw a frisbee he will run full speed in the opposite direction of the frisbee! Sometimes he's good at catching balls or frisbees, but he does have his special moments! We thought about doing agility with him, but when he trips and does a nose dive into the ground while he's going after a ball, we decided that wasn't a good idea! He'll be a therapy dood instead. :)

Gavin is similar to Yankee center fielder Johnny Damen - great at catching the ball, but not much of an arm!

Maybe Finn has trouble with his eye-mouth coordination. ;)

Spud could enter a Frisbee contest and maybe even win. The first five months we had him he feel over. Just plop. As time went on he didn't even come close to following where a ball was going let alone catch it.. but he stood on his feet at least. We were so happy he no longer fell over. :)
I think when they are growing so fast it is similar to teenagers who just are too awkward.

Luca catches balls but Calla couldn't. Then I remembered he took a while too. I think it's around 1 year they they become better at catching. For Calla, I have to make her sit, very gently lob the ball and with luck she'll catch it. I then make a big fuss although I don't know why, since I get tired of throwing the ball even for Luca.

Lilly can't catch a ball if I bounce it, but she can catch if I throw it to her. Can Finn catch if you throw it to him??
