It is Too Hot for Laurie, Fudge, and Vern!!!

I hate to be one of those old people who complain about the weather, but I am very sad to report that I am one of those people.  I can’t stand this heat and finally, I have two family members that agree wholeheartedly with me…Fudge and Vern. Frankly, I will take snow and ice over this weather. Today, our temperatures were over 100 degrees and I had to take drastic measures and find some shorts to wear. God knows Vern is afraid of everything and I was worried that one look at my normally denim covered legs in shorts might send him over the edge. Some women in shorts might be met with cat calls when they go out in public, but I am more prone to hear comments like, “Casper, when is the last time those legs have seen the light of day?” Luckily, here is another great thing about Fudge and Vern....they do not judge and love me even in shorts.

 

I am also not ashamed to say my crabby meter goes up as the temperature increases. My DD got married last June. When she first told me she wanted an outdoor wedding at the height of the hot season, I looked her right in the eye and asked her what I had done to make her hate me. She said something dumb like this had always been her dream and it would be fun. I told her that if her dream included a menopausal woman sitting in the front row baking in the sun in formal wear than count me in. I also told her that if she expected me to wear Spanx with my ensemble, she’d better have the Jaws of Life and a medic on stand by.  As usually happens, she was so concerned for my welfare that she went ahead with the outdoor wedding plans.

 

Even in the heat, I still take Fudge and Vern to the park each day for their normal walk and some training. I try and make concessions for their reduced energy levels and yesterday after our short walk we sat in the car with the A/C on while I grilled them on their sit/stays. Vern had his down pat and managed to hold his stay for quite a while. I might need some clarification from my trainer if it is ok to have your butt on the passenger seat and paws on the floor while sucking every last drop of cold air from the vent. He never moved from that spot, so I am pretty sure it counts. Fudge had one momentary lapse on her sit/stay when she lay down to get the last drop of cold water in the dog bowl. When we got back home and out of the heat, we all worked on our down/stays.

Laurie, did you forget to take off your white tights before you put your shorts on? I have been complaining all week about the drizzle and fog, but 100 degrees, you can have it. Once it gets past 80 degrees it is too warm for me and Quincy is not too  fond of the heat either. It's 65 degrees here today, we just got back from a game of ball and a swim for Quincy, now I'm going to take my bike out for a ride and clean the car to get it ready to trade for a new set of wheels. Smart doodles, sitting in front of the ac, must be murder at that temp wearing a fur coat.

You are so clever to get in the car and train! We wouldn't have made it to the park in that weather either. Lots of people are dreading the pulling out of the shorts drama but doodles don't care (would love to know what they are thinking though) Myla also likes to lick our legs (gross) I'm with your DD on the "dream" outdoor wedding...I had the same dream but it was at the end of October in WI and it rained the morning of which made my stepmom VERY happy-I was so upset because I love fall colors and they were going to put us inside. My brother got some help and dried off all the chairs by the gazebo and demanded it be outdoors! I'm not going to lie it was cold in strapless dresses but it was my day. Everyone ran inside right away to drink while I tried to drag back all the people I wanted in my outdoor pictures!! So we had 3 days of absolute hot and if it's not that it's cold and raining my doodles are very bored. Do you have a doodle pool and do they like it? Mine are AFRAID of it!!

I'm with you in trying to protect the general public as well as my dogs from the sight of too much of my flesh! But I would not consider walking further than from my house to my car and from the car to my office yesterday. The park and training? I seriously think you need to rethink this on 100 degree days. We'd miss all the funny posts.....

Fudge and Vern.  See if you can talk your mom into getting a bigger pool than this one.  Convince her that a pool will help her tan all 8 feet of her long poodle-white legs.    Just be glad your mom doesn't shave you like she shaves those legs of hers!  Holy Doodles, wouldn't that be rude to have a daily shaving.

We've suffered through a couple days like that here too...today is better.  Murphy HATES the heat.  He really only wants to leave the air conditioning to go out to potty...and then right back inside.  Even on these short trips his tongue is hanging out the side of his mouth, and there's "drool"  constantly hanging from his lower lip.  We did your training yesterday very early before it got too hot....after that Murph "napped" for the rest of the day..he only moved to head for the water bowl.  Oh and now that Summer is here, he will ONLY drink fresh, cold water.  If the water has been sitting for more than a few minute he refuses to drink it.  To get my attention he bangs on the metal bowl with his paw.  That brings me running because I know it's a matter of seconds before the dish goes flying and the "stale water" will be all over the floor.  My guys love it when I have shorts on....they follow me around trying to lap my legs hoping for lotion.  Laurie, I think working on your sit and down/stays in front of the car air conditioner vent makes total sense....smart woman.  Hoping that your "heat wave" is over, and that cooler weather is headed your way.
