The ocean off San Diego is very warm (hopefully as a precursor to an El Nino event which will bring us much needed rain in the fall and winter.
An added benefit to the warm water is that we are experiencing a deluge of warmer water fish off our coast. Local day boats are getting yellowfin and bluefin tuna as well as Mahi Mahi (AKA dorado). I have been fishing twice and eating yellowfin tuna on the grill 2-times a week. The dogs are also sharing in our bounty and they love it. A little ground up yellowfin on their kibble is great for their coats and general health (and the tuna is great for our health also). When I grill the fish, I marinate the fish we will eat and grill the fish for the dogs plain!
I am also going on a "boy's trip" to Baja California's East Cape (Google: Rancho Leonero) with my son-in-law, his dad, his brother and various other male members of the family. (The gals took a cruise to Hawaii last month). The reports from the East Cape look quite good with 20-50# tuna abundant (the tuna I have been catching off our coast have been averaging 15# or so). We are also expecting to catch dorado (mahi mahi) and wahoo which is called by it's Hawaiian name, Ahi, in restaurants.
I am expecting to bring back about 40-50# of frozen fillets which will last us for quite a while.
I will bring a camera and shoot some images...

I ended up being top rod of our twelve guy group. Plenty of yellowfin tuna and dorado (A.K.A.: mahi-mahi).
My best fish was this 40 pound roosterfish which, I was told was the best of the season for that lodge. The fish was 46-inches from nose to fork of tail...
I don't usually keep roosters but, I could not revive this one so I donated it to a poorer Mexican family to add a bit of protein to their diet. They will share the fish with their neighbors...
Have fun Richard, you deserve it!
Have fun! Looking forward to the photos!
Have fun, and please share your photos!
Lucky you with all that fresh tuna! Enjoy the trip, sounds wonderful!
I absolutely love fish. All fish, any fish, but my usual go to fish is salmon. My DH is not a fish eater, so I share with Finnley. At least she has good sense and good taste. Enjoy your trip and post some pics !
Super! I'll bet there are plenty of happy dogs around your place. My brother has been keeping us supplied because he is an avid fisherman, but here in the Monterey Bay, it is all about the whales. You can watch them from any hillside or from a boat. It has been at least a month that the bay has been full of whales feeding. And, yes, let's just hope for some rain.
Mmm I love tuna!
We don't eat a lot of fish because we're far from the ocean (and DH doesn't really like fish). I did have fish 'n chips last night because we went out for dinner :)
I miss the fresh fish we had in Hawaii (was married there a few years ago).
Yum!! I remember the days when we lived in San Diego and got to eat freshly caught yellowfin and bluefin right off the grill!! Nothing better!! Good eats to you guys and the pups.....and have a wonderful fishing trip!!
