My Boys Scared Me To Death!

I just had an experience that terrified me.  Guinness and Murph were playing here in the den, and I was on the computer.  They were doing their "shark biting" thing and having a good time.  Then I noticed that there was a problem....they both started thrashing about and Guinness was making an ungodly noise.  I jumped up and realized that their collars were somehow stuck together and Guinness could not breathe...he was strangling.  The problem was that they were thrashing so much that I couldn't get to the release on the collar.  My DH had left already to get the grandkids off to school, so I started screaming for my DS....I have no idea what he could possibly do to help.  Anyway this went on for several more seconds while I struggled with the clasp....at this point Guinness's anal glands released....poor baby probably thought he was dying.  Anyway, I eventually was able to undo the clasp and they are okay.  Guinness is still terrified and hiding under the bed.  For a long time I used breakaway collars for this reason, but they kept coming off at inopportune times, so I stopped using them.  I guess I will have to always remember to remove their collars inside the house from now on.  If I hadn't been right there, Guinness would have died.  If it happened 10 minutes later, I would have been in the shower.  Just something to think about for others with two Doodles who "romp" together.  I'm so grateful that they are okay.  Now I have to figure out how to get this odor out of here and give Guinness a bath.

Jane~how scary that must have been. I've heard of this happening before and think it would be a great idea to take them off inside but we don't. Time to talk with DH about this! So glad you were there and they are ok!

Jane, I am so sorry for the scare, what a horrifying thing to go through, then to think "'if only.....". The Lord was there protecting you from that. Thank you for the advice on removing our doodles collars when they are home.  It's a great and simple way to "save" them.  Something similliar happend to a friend who had her doodle in the car.  She has auto windows and her dog stepped on the window button for the window to go up, her goldendoodle's head was out the window, she was being strangled as well.  Thankfully she was able to pull over quickly and safely get her goldendoodle's head out. So very scary. Ever since she told me about that, if Dublin is with me, the window lock is on so he can't do that.  Now, I will also remove their collars when at home as well. I am so glad they are both ok and I hope today brings Guinness and Murphy a day of play & fun.

Oh my gosh, what a terrifying experience. I am so glad you are all okay now.  I take the dogs' collars off in the house, and the Vet does check the micro chip every time we go in.  (Which isn't too often.) I do keep blunt ended scissors on hand and when one of my Beagles got caught, was able to easily cut the collar off of her.

Spud does not have a collar on right now. Sweetie grabs it and pulls on it like a tug toy. I put a stop to that real fast.

My first instinct was to grab a knife when this happened in my home. I quickly put it down. There was no way!!

Yes, my collar is a snap on.  I think it would have been even more difficult to get it off during the wild thrashing if it was a buckle collar.  I was telling my Trainer about this this morning and he told me about another client who actually lost one of her dogs this way.  We were so lucky.

Oh my goodness, so sorry this happened. I would have been terrified. I think my anal glands would have released too lol.  Poor guys! I'm so glad they are ok. It seems like Guiness is on a bad luck streak these days. Keep on eye on that one! I'm going to remember to keep the collars off inside from now on. Thanks for posting about this Jane!

I asked Jane earlier in this post and her collars were snap ones. My doodles have buckle ones like yours.

How scary!  Im so glad you were there & able to get the collar off.

I do leave Trixies collar on & it is a Buckle one- not a snap on : (   I will have to look for a snap on one.  Granted we dont have play dates real often...But what if it did get caught on something.
