Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I just had an experience that terrified me. Guinness and Murph were playing here in the den, and I was on the computer. They were doing their "shark biting" thing and having a good time. Then I noticed that there was a problem....they both started thrashing about and Guinness was making an ungodly noise. I jumped up and realized that their collars were somehow stuck together and Guinness could not breathe...he was strangling. The problem was that they were thrashing so much that I couldn't get to the release on the collar. My DH had left already to get the grandkids off to school, so I started screaming for my DS....I have no idea what he could possibly do to help. Anyway this went on for several more seconds while I struggled with the clasp....at this point Guinness's anal glands released....poor baby probably thought he was dying. Anyway, I eventually was able to undo the clasp and they are okay. Guinness is still terrified and hiding under the bed. For a long time I used breakaway collars for this reason, but they kept coming off at inopportune times, so I stopped using them. I guess I will have to always remember to remove their collars inside the house from now on. If I hadn't been right there, Guinness would have died. If it happened 10 minutes later, I would have been in the shower. Just something to think about for others with two Doodles who "romp" together. I'm so grateful that they are okay. Now I have to figure out how to get this odor out of here and give Guinness a bath.

Hi Jane.....Just wondering how Guinness is doing now that several hours have passed.
Jane I am getting to the point were I fear seeing that you have posted!! OMD!!! I'm so glad this incident turned out as it did!! And how many years have you aged since January? Hugs to all of you!
Jane, I am so sorry and thank you for posting this. I cannot imagine your terror along with Murphy and Guinness'. I hope you are able to rest a bit and to calm sweet Guinness down.
how scary! I remember reading about this happening to someone before. For that reason I never buy collars with buckles, I get the clip ones instead. Glad they are ok
What a scare Jane! Poor Guiness. Good reminder for everyone about collars and playing doodles.
Oh My. This is terrifying. I just know that you are still shaking in your boots. We are so tuned in to being so careful with collars outside we forget about the problems that can occur inside even in play.Poor Guiness he will ned lots of TLC.
Have a relaxing rets of the day. Thank you for reminding us.
What a terrible thing to happen you are so so lucky that you were there to be able to undo the clasp. I'm so glad everything is ok now (except the smell!) I always remember reading about a tag that got caught in an air vent that was nearly a disaster too????! and always take Riley's collar off in the house even though we don't have air vents or indeed a second dog.
How scarey. This is a big fear of mine because this happened when my friends' two dogs were playing. The only time I put a collar on my dogs is when we are going for a walk or riding in the car. My yard is fenced and neither one of them are jumpers, even if they see a squirrel or other critter on the other side of the fence, they just bark at it. I hope Guiness came out from hiding under the bed, poor thing, and poor you.
My heart is racing just hearing about the situation. OMD Jane, I am so happy you were there to help but sorry it happened.
Poor guys!
Because I only have one I don't have to worry about such things, Daisy has however gotten her tags stuck in the floor vent and on her water dish - loud and scary, perhaps I should remover hers in the house as well.
Oh, Jane that is terrible!! I am glad that neither of them were seriously hurt and don't even want to imagine what could have happened if you weren't there. My two get breakaway collars put on them every morning before I leave for work. Then we put on the regular collars when we go out for our walks but I don't always remember to take them off once we get back home. Thank you for posting this and giving me a reminder.
