Peri has already passed two levels of obedience with her trainer; however, she has not taken a class since September 2009.  I have been pretty diligent about her training, but she is by no means 100% reliable when she is distracted.  To help us get back into training mode, I decided to sign us up for the next level, which is "Better Family Manners" aka "Advanced Obedience".  That is the next level our trainer offers.

Here's the catch.....the Canine Good Citizen test is administered at the end.  Oh lordy, I am so nervous. I was one of those A+ students, always seeking approval from my teachers, etc... This is how I am when I take Peri to these classes.  I am going to work my darndest with her during my free time; however, I don't want us to fail!  I know it can sometimes takes multiple times to pass, but still!!!

This is how proud I was when she passed her last obedience class. Can it happen again???? Classes start February 10 and continue for 8 weeks. Yikes. Please talk me down from the ledge.

You guys will do great!  Try to relax and have some fun with it.  Even if you run into problems, you can do it again.  The first time we took the CGC test, Halas couldn't stand still to be approached by a stranger.  It was close, but he was just a little too excited.  We just waited until everyone else had tested, paid another $10, and took the test again.  That time, he did great.  You'll have so much fun with the classes, bonding with Peri and learning new things.  Enjoy!

The best, most fun class I ever took with Chervil was the CGC.  Because I had a goal, I was much more focused and consistent and it really showed in our training.  If you can (I know, I was the A student, too), try to do it for the joy of bonding with Peri and seeing her stretch and grow--not to pass the test.  Take the pressure off all of you.  The "test" will only confirm what you'll see and know already.  And for some reason, when our class took the test, all the dogs--even the nutty, goofy, distracted ones--somehow knew to strut their stuff, and they all did really well.  If it's all about having fun with you, Peri will, too!

I think you will do great.  We took the class that went over all the areas of the CGC.  Our trainer encouraged all of us to try the CGC that would be given at the end of the class.  I was sure our two doodles would not pass but I thought at least we could see what areas we needed to work on.  To my surprise, both passed the test on the first try. I had worried for a week about the test and they both passed without any problem at all.  I think their biggest distraction is each other so we took them in one at a time for the test.

Good luck.  I know you will do great.

You guys will do great, Allyson!  If my Duke (problem child) can pass the CGC, Peri will do just fine!  Sheba did wonderfully but Duke passed by the skin of his teeth!  I'm glad you are taking the advanced obedience class which will be to your benefit. We just had basic and intermediate training and then took the CGC.  Soon, if all goes as planned, Duke will be going back to school to work on a couple issues we have with him.  I would like Sheba to become a therapy dog and we are waiting for the TDI test to be offered again locally.  Good luck and try not to worry so much!!  : )
