Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have become some what of a food fanatic and frequently I have many exchanges with friends and future friends about food choices. Just today I was 'e'versing with a friend here on DK about a food we had presented to our panel of taste testers here. I decided that an excerpt of it is an does carry a message we should all keep in the back of our mind regarding nutritional selections for our beloved furkids and wanted to place that where it may be of more benefit to more people so here it is ~

Honestly we have no tried and true locked in menu. I would be a horrible cook book writer because it is a pinch of this and a dash of that, and our recipes are much like snowflakes, each unique. What I can tell you is consistent with our food practices is to never stop listening and keep your eyes open. If something occurred that we needed to change our food tomorrow, I know exactly where I would go next. Our dogs are exposed to many ingredients and types of proteins. We have sampled a LOT because I want to know if they have any sensitivities. The other thing I do is hang around my friends food store a LOT. The internet is a wonderful resource and allows us to travel far beyond geographical boundaries but oh to eavesdrop on real people food issues and dilemnas and to take in the verbal exchange between the seeker, the experienced customer and professional staff ~ as the VISA ad says ~ PRICELESS! I never could have guessed that a formula change in our food ever would have lead me to be so passionate about this topic but I am. It is really so basic, today I find myself stunned that it has only been in recent years that we actually started examining fundamentals like nutrition as potential excelerators in health conditions of our pets many view as 'normal' for a breed or age of dog. My future puppy families look to me to provide the foundation for a long, healthy and happy life for their doodle family companions ~ it is my belief that nutrition is as important as health testing, genetics, temperament and more. That responsibility I will never take lightly.

Thank you Trina! Amazing isn't it? Everything that we know today and in our pets so many linger so far behind in acknowledging what an important role a fundamental like nutrition 101 plays. Why wouldn't it?

Adrianne ~ how is your Samantha doing now? Do you agree with your vet about a pound? While I do not have the ability to see her, the current weight and height do not seem out of the ordinary to me. How old is she?

I totally agree Trina about the lack of info coming from my vet. He told me 3 weeks ago that Samantha needed to loose about 1 pound - 23" high & weighs 62 lbs. He did ask what I feed her and told him Whole Food Baked Holistic Kibble (Whole Foods store brand) and I cook her chicken and serve it with the broth, string beans. I will add craisins, peas and carrots, and sometimes rice or pasta. Did he even venture an opinion? Did he give me any advice as to how to get her to loose the weight? Did he even bother to ask 'how much' I feed her?
I assume you have guessed that the answer is 'no' to all.
I am thankful for all the wisdom that is shared here in DK; if it wasn't for that wisdom, Samantha would be eating Purina Puppy Chow.
