Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Many of you know that we purchased our first home in March. It is on 1 acre and has a great backyard for the dogs. Problem is that it is not fenced! I have been holding off because of the expense. I want it to look nice - we can tie into our neighbor's cedar fence on one side, but the rest is up to us!
On Saturday I ran into a guy from high school who does all types of contract work. He does fences quite a bit and told me he would purchase the materials at cost, not upcharge me on those and charge for hourly labor only. He gave me a quick estimate based on the size of our backyard (probably .4 acres) of something quite a bit less than I originally guessed it would cost us.
January-March is super dead for him so he is going to come out after the holidays and we are getting started! Cedar along the other side to give us some additional privacy and match the neighbor's, then aluminum along the front/driveway (with a gate to get to the back porch) and aluminum along the back. I want people driving by to still be able to see our beautiful woods and don't want a huge privacy fence along the whole yard.
But bottom line: the dogs are getting a fence!!!!! I cannot wait for the day that I can open the back doors and let them run out and romp and exercise and play play play play!

You gotta know how super excited I am for you!!!! It would be my DREAM to get into a place that had or would allow a fence. What a wonderful way to start the new year!!!! So so happy for you!
There is nothing like a good fence. Just make sure there are no tiny little spots where Tacky can wiggle through. You would be amazed at what little dogs can get under and around. We have 6 ft. fences all around our property and Gracie has never even given them a second glance. They are so old that all you see is shrubbery and no fence at all. We had a 4ft. driveway gate that is the wrought iron type and one day Gracie decided to jump it. She never had even given it an attempt but that day her best friends were already outside playing and I was 5 minutes late to joining up with the group. Gracie just wouldn't stand for that so she jumped up and over from a standing position. This is my huge 70 lb tall Standard GD...boy can she jump. We have since put an extension on the gate making it 6 ft. She never even gave it a thought for the first two years. But it only takes that one time. Having a totally gated and fenced area is amazing. We just leave the back door open and Gracie has full run of everything and can stand in the driveway and bark at any strangers who come up our street!!! ha ha Oh, the Sheba Inu who is the size of a cat and lives in our neighborhood manages to crawl under the driveway gate and comes in every morning just to poop on our lawn! The neighbors let her out a few times a day to do her business in all of the neighborhood yards!!! We had to leave a 6 inch gap across the bottom in our gate because it swings up hill a bit and as it does it starts hitting the cement. So like Lucy said, make sure there are no spaces where Tacky can sneak under or through!!!
This is so GREAT! You are all going to be able to enjoy your new big yard.... I am Jealous, but so happy for you all :)
