Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I am posting this to inform any members of this supposedly rare condition.
We had not encountered Puppy Strangles in our years of working with dogs until just recently. Puppy Strangles is described in Wikipedia, "Puppy strangles is a disease of puppies, also referred to as puppy head gland disease, juvenile pyoderma and juvenile cellulitis." We recently have had five cases of this rare condition from different shelters. All of these cases involved poodle mix dogs...
I won't post pictures of the puppies when they were suffering from this disfiguring and possibly fatal condition because, to tell you the truth, I don't think that anyone would enjoy seeing those images.
The condition can be easily alleviated with a shot of prednisone and a regimen of antibiotics. Our foster mom thought that she was going to lose little Daniel the night she received him from the shelter but, he is fine now, except that he lost some of the pigment in his nose...
Stanley was also a victim of Puppy Strangles.
Fortunately once the puppy is cured of this conditions there are no after effects...
I don't know why we had five instances of this rare condition within a few months time but, we are thankful that our vet and our foster mom stepped up to save the delightful little puppies...
In the interest of informing owners of Doodle puppies about Puppy Strangles here are images of what this condition looks like. WARNING: These images are pretty gruesome but being aware of this condition might save a puppy's life since it is rare and occasionally misdiagnosed by vets...

Thanks, Richard.
Thank you for this information!
Thank you, Richard. We all need to be educated. It is one of the things I like best about dk is the sharing of knowledge and experiences.
Thank you for sharing this important information. I do hope that all breeders and new puppy owners take a look and hopefully never have to use the knowledge.
