I don't know if anyone else is into watching these reality series family shows on TLC like I am. I watch them all Kate Plus 8, 19 Kids & Counting, the Little Couple, etc. It brings me to this new show called "Quints by Surprise". Quints by Surprise is about the Jones family from Texas. They have a 7ish year old daughter and 22ish month quints (5 Babies! Holy Cow!). Let me just say I cannnot EVEN imagine!!

On the episode, I think it was Monday night, the family has to move and the dad, Ethan, promised the older daughter, Elliott, a puppy when they moved to their new house with a fenced in yard. The episode went on to show them going to the breeders house with 5 babies and the older daughter and all these puppies. I swear I think the puppies were Doodles - I was thinking Goldendoodles, they showed the mom for a moment and she looked doodleish as well. The breeder had some other yorkie mixes as well. I have been trying to find a video clip online to see if anyone else thinks these were doodles. My thoughts were "what reputable breeder would allow a family with all of the babies come and handle their puppies" and "what reputable breeder would think this is a good family for a puppy" ~ really having 5 kids 22 months old isn't enough work? I don't see a puppy getting what it needs and I think its dangerous.

Did anyone else happen to see this? Or see any video clip online?

http://www.joneslife.net/ - this is the website for the family and they have them featured on the TLC website also.

Let me first say - I don't watch these shows. I hate "reality" TV, and watch very little TV to begin with, my drug of choice is the internet ;)

Just to be the devil's advocate here...I want to defend the choice to have a bigger family and dogs! :) We have 3 kids .. one is 18 months and I am due with baby number four in a little over a month. We did choose to get a second dog recently, and some people thought no way could we handle the extra "work" of a dog right now. I'm a stay at home Mom. I would argue our dogs get more attention then most people who work and commute. If you're gone 6AM - 6PM I guarantee my dogs get more loving. My kids take naps, my kids go to bed between 7:30 and 8PM..we're up until at least midnight with the girls AND we're committed that our dogs are a priority. Violet is in training, Veruca goes out on runs with my husband. So, I do think it can be done... having a big family, babies AND dogs.

That said - I don't think a puppy should be bought as a "reward" like a toy, or ice cream. It should be a whole family desire since it takes everyone being on board to be good owners and most people are pretty ignorant to the level of commitment it takes to really be a good dog owner. I'm guessing this dog (by your descriptions) will end up outside 90% of the time. Maybe a trainer looking for some self promotion will offer to come train the family? It would be a real kindness to the dog.

You hit the nail on the head Frannie. The last two sentences sums it up!

Sorry, but here's my rant. I don't watch these shows because I get enraged. I have many friends and several family members who went through IVF in order to get pregnant and none of them have 5, 6, or 8 kids at a time. The most any of them have is twins. Reputable IVF doctors do not put 8, 10, or 12 viable embryos back into the uterus.

All that doesn't relate back to the dog. I'm sure the kids will adore the dog. I'm also sure the parents won't be able to handle it. So sad and SO ANNOYING.

I didn't see the show and agree with the negative attitude--the kids definitely are not coming first when the parents are subjecting them to cameras following them everywhere in order to make money. We have a family in our town who had sextuplets--they were hoping for a lot of help from companies--maybe a TV show, or what have you. But, they are not attractive people and the town did not come through nor did any TV shows or companies show any interest. Maybe it was because they expected it and acted as though it was owed to them.
They are very nice people, though and are doing their best to raise their kids. Three have disabilities and all of them are in special ed to some extent, so these parents have their hands full. It's a tough life for all!

I agree that it was totally irresponsible of the TV network to show this, especially considering Jon & Kate had the same situation on one of their episodes and they ended up sending their dogs back to the breeder! What kind of message are they sending? Maybe we should go ahead and send them the DRC/IDog links right now. I was thinking that the breeder must be a byb seeing the other mixes and the obvious lack of consideration for the puppies safety around all those babies.

I have to admit that I do watch them - and 19 Kids & Counting too! And you know that they are getting donations, paid for the show, etc. I can't imagine a reality tv series paying the family minimum wage either! But with this show like others pointed out they are moving and downsizing to a house that I would LOVE to downsize too - I mean really? 3700 Sq Ft beautiful home is that suffering? Come on!! How many more multiple shows can there possibly be? I forgot about the one on Bravo about the Masche sextuplets - for whaever reason their show seems more tolerable - maybe because they aren't going out and getting a puppy with ZERO thought.

I hate these shows - every since Jon & Kate were in the news so much. The dog thing really ticks me off. I cannot imagine even having one baby and a puppy - this is the whole reason I got Peri when I did. She'll be 3 or so and a good big sis when the baby comes along. FIVE kids and a puppy = REHOME in the future (my opinion only, don't want to sound judgemental)

I am going to be negative too. I really hate the fact that people behaving badly get on reality shows altogether. And , surprise, the octomom and her 14 children are going on welfare because her schemes for a book etc. fell through. I think the doctor who allowed her to be impregnated should be stripped of his license. Many of these unfortunate kids are special needs, which is not a surprise. So do I think the original family should get a pup, NO. But I also don't think they should have gotten a show to begin with.

Lucy and Sophies Mom- I believe they did use in vitro fertilization; correct me if I am wrong but believe he is unable to have kids and they aren't biologically his... these types of procedures are controversial to say the least (octomom!?) but one risk is having multiple babies! I also remember Jon & Kate saying they were given the option to 'downsize' the pregnancy when she became pregnant with 6... which they obviously chose not to! ;)

O.k. I have to add one more thing I just thought of.....they should take a page from 'Jon and Kate plus 8' or 'Kate plus 8' or whatever you want to call it. They got two puppies and ended up giving them back!! What do you think that did to the children much less the dogs?????

Lucy, I am with you on the 19 kids and counting......I can't even go there either.
