As women sometimes do, I was having an emotional morning.  Standing in the blustery subzero darkness in my pjs and overstuffed down coat waiting for Gracie to do her biz, tears rolled down my face. Wishing for her to hurry up but oblivious to what she was actually doing, I look down and Gracie was sitting there in front of me lifting her paw and pawing at my leg - as if to say it will be ok, Mom. Kind of like a child will do when they see their mom all flustered and rush to give them a hug.

It might just be coincidence, but it made my heart feel good.

Love this dog even when she's being ornery!

How could that sweet face not bring you joy? Good girl Gracie.

I just warned my cranky pants husband the other day. Stop your whiny crap with the dog. He was irritated with life and so forth and told Monty, who was following him around, "stop bugging me, go see Mom"  But what he was missing was that because he was so cranky, Monty stayed right by him, trying I'm guessing to bring him back....

Our dogs are so in tuned to our behavior and expressions. What a sweet pup you have in Gracie!

Our daughter is chronically ill. One of our dogs is at her side most of the time. He really stays close when her pain is particularly intense.

Dogs are indeed able to read human facial expressions, better than any other non-human species:

It is just surprising that she's so young and has caught on. She's 13 weeks (well in a few days will be 14 weeks). We've had her since she was 8 weeks. This was the first time I had been so emotional since we had gotten her. Some of it was her doing. But mostly just the season I'm in. :)

Jack is a rock for me....he has opened my eyes truly to so much sensitivity to all different types of species .... Jack knows me well.......he is very in tune with my body and always has been. I believe that we live as a pack....family and they are super in tune with us....I am sure she was wondering what was wrong.... Jack has licked my tears before which actually made me cry harder because he is so awesome
