Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I was standing in school just now waiting for my children when one of the moms that I know started talking about another school's auction she had attended last year.  Apparently, a doodle was one of the items to bid on and this woman 'won' the doodle.  When I asked her how much she adored him, she told me...wait for it...prepare yourself...that she had to bring it to a shelter because they were not prepared for how big and rowdy it would be and how much time and energy it would take to raise a doodle.  Knowing the answer before I asked it but being a glutton for punishment, I asked her how she could have bid on a dog that she had no idea how to raise.  Apparently, she thought he was 'just the cutest little thing' and that was enough. When I asked how her children handled their loss, she said that it was not a problem because daddy bought them another dog right away so 'no harm, no foul.'  Truthfully, while I pray the dog is in a great forever home, I know that just about any place else would be better than being with woman!  I am still trying to process this on so many levels.

'Gobsmacked' is the Irish response to this story.  Absolutely incredulous.

Nothing surprises me anymore.  The school was wrong in the first place to allow an animal to be auctioned off as part of a fund raiser.  But it is all about money these days, isn't it?  The people who participated in this were wrong and poor examples for their own families.  But worse things happen to animals every day.

I would also contact the organizer of the fundraiser and discuss the error of their ways. Also discuss what it means to be a respectable breeder so that they realize that is not who they were dealing with.

I know the feeling. A person I know adopted a dog and has two young kids after a year or so decides we're to busy to keep the dog. Out the dog goes no matter what about how the kids are affected and are learning animals are disposable. I think my tongue is getting shorter an shorter after seeing these types of things.

I absolutely am saddened and horrifed by this story.   Auctioning any animal is reprehensible, but this woman you describe seems to think that life is disposable and replaceable.  Shame on her...what an awful message she is sending her children about responsible behavior, compassion and empathy.  I hate to think the kind of adults her children will become.

Everything about this story is wrong.  I've never heard of animals being auctioned off except for perhaps cattle at those large cattle auctions.   A puppy being auctioned off at a school event?????   Shame on the school officials who allowed this!     As for the foolish woman....sadly, it's a fact there are too many like her, who think pets are disposable.   I'm sorry for her children.   There are so many wonderful life lessons for kids who learn to nurture family pets.    What lessons are her kids learning????

What Cheryl said!

Just like a new shirt.  Hey, the size isn't right, wrong colour, dosen't "fit" just turn it in and get another one.

When I think about how deeply I feel about my dog and the research and lengths I went to before making the committment to getting a dog...well it was one of the most important decisions of my life.  This is very upsetting indeed.

Ugh, stupid, studid woman, people like this I want to slap up the side of the head and shake so sense into them...You were good, I probably would have lost it, and she wouldn't have liked me thats for sure...Whoever  donated a dog for an auction needs to be slapped too...And the people that allowed the dog to be auctioned, should get in line for a good slapping too...

This makes me sooooo angry!!!!  I am sry, I am not a violent or nasty person, but things like this just make me sooo mad!!!

What a sad story-why auction a dog to just anyone anyway? That;s like impulse buying! I too hope she's in a better place/family.

I believe that Kathy Lee Gifford got her Goldendoodle Lola from an fundraising auction. What a lucky 80lb Doodle she is!

But i'm sure there are many that end up being re-homed or worse after the emotional purchase becomes a reality....not everyone loves the big, goofy, rowdy side of our doodles or have the patience to train them to be the wonderful, sweet companions they are.
