Rosco just scared the carp out of me!

We had just finished up a walk and were entering our yard when Rosco attempted to run after something (in the yard). I let the leash go so as not to get pulled on, figuring it was a squirrel. It was pretty dark in the yard, but the squirrel morphed into a cat. Frightened me a little, but assumed the cat would be quick enough to get away ... this 'cat' was was not that quick...just barely staying ahead of him...I started yelling after Rosco "NO" but he was deaf. Didn't attempt any other command as this was way above anything I knew he'd respond to. Why wasn't this cat getting away? I was so afraid he'd hurt it.

But it wasn't a cat...it was a... PUG!!! WTH? What is a pug doing in our yard, alone, in the dark? The chase continued in a smaller and smaller circle, I grew more and more frantic, trying to find the end of the leash to grab.

It's not like Rosco's ever hurt a small dog, and he's been around plenty. But...once a chase like that gets going you can't truly predict what will happen.

I ended up having to grab Rosco by the fur to stop him. And then I was able to take his leash. Instructed him to sit. Breathed. Took him inside, turned on the lights to the backyard and then went back out. But the pug was gone. Poor little guy...must have snuck through the small hole in our fence (that none of our dogs could ever slip through). I swear I've seen this same pug wandering around the neighborhood before.

I went out on our street to try to spot him, but it was way too dark and he probably was way too scared to be doing anything other than running for his life. I called animal control to let them know he had just been at my address, hopefully he'll be found.

But oh my that was a frightening chase to walk into after a most peaceful evening walk!

Oh stop the press! The officer just called me back and it sounds like he spotted some folks a couple houses down with a pug...so hopefully that was him, safe and sound!

I think it just means that Adina is very polite and proper.

I've just re-read the title of this blog, does that mean you're a Koi pond?......Interesting!

Yeah, it's never the dogs that are a problem....but some of them owners? People should be tested before they're allowed to have pets!

I doubt a child would be wandering around in the dark and able to reach up high enough to open our gates. But I'm positive Rosco would not have hurt any human walking in. We have tenants that have to use our backyard to get in and out and they sometimes bring friends. My dogs will bark until they come in the yard and then just joyfully follow them around excitedly. They are ridiculously friendly. I'm not at all worried about people.

Well we don't have a true 'animal control' anymore I learned. It really is just police. And it didn't sound as if the officer gave that family any sort of talking to. However, I think it's my friend's dad, so I'll talk to her about telling him to have a chat with the family if it's not too late.

I told Clark I should volunteer for the animal control position. I SO would...if I weren't a little flower of a girl. LOL. I wouldn't be as afraid of the dogs as I would be of the scary owners I'd have to encounter.

Just a thought to toss around...I wonder if Rosco would have injured the dog if they would have deemed him dangerous....I just seen a show on animal planet where a dog on it's own property went after two mailmen and bit them. It was proven this dog was so friendly and never injured anyone, even kids could play rough with this dog and it behaved so good, the only conclussion they had was the mailmen entered property the dog protects and he felt threatened. This dog was quarenteened for 14 days and tested. He passed all his test and was allowed to return home, but the owners had to keep him confined to certain areas so this would not happen again. Would Rosco have acted differently if this was a child that wandered into the yard, or would he had been protective of his home? Some scary thoughts.....

I also would hope the animal control officer spoke to the owners about allowing the dog to run loose. That's a ticketable offense around here, and rightly so.

Well I hope the animal control guy gave the couple a stern talking to about keeping their pug under control. Stray dogs can cause so many problems, not the pugs fault I know., but sheesh!
