Saying Goodbye to Our Beloved Dood

Yesterday we had to say goodbye to our sweet, precious pup. So sudden- at 11 years and 5 months old. Loving and beloved, happy boy. Sat night one minute he was playing and the next he stood in a catatonic state, hardly could respond to commands or know where his water bowl was. He recovered a bit on Sunday, more so on Monday where he saw a vet. The only symptom was tenderness around his stomach which led to xrays and the eventual and telling ultrasound yesterday. Doodlie had Hemangiosarcoma. Tumors in his spleen, liver and the one in his stomach had burst which is why he felt so much relief yesterday. He was nearly back to normal laying in the snow, enjoying the warmth of the sun, listening to the birds and smelling the air of winter. This was his last moment at home. Hemangiosarcoma is an aggressive cancer that they know little about says the doctor other than it tends to be more common among large breed dogs. We had him on raw food by Darwin Pet, he loved his fruits and veggies, filtered water. There was nothing I could do to protect my baby boy from this. We are heartbroken. But know we made the right decision - thank goodness euthanesia is an option. So much love from one guy- We will always be grateful that our lives were blessed by Doodlie.

I am so sorry for your Loss...I know the feeling all too well, we just had to put down our 8 yr. old Goldnen doodle to the same awful disease...He lived exactly 7 weeks after the surgery, they removed his spleen, and he had a 9 1/2 lb tumor on it...It was just awful..they also found he had a smaller one near the prostate, which they couldn't remove or he would have been incontinent..He seemed to recover well, and then went downhill very quickly, within a week, we had to put him down, it nearly killed me, I was devastated.  Like you I was told that it is a disease of large dogs, and is very prevalent in Goldens...Hugs to you I am still devastated, I really feel your pain and sorrow. Lets hope that thye are at the Rainbow Bridge, running and playing, and healthy and happy.....

My heart is broken for you. My sweet doodle will be turning 11 in April. I cannot imagine how I will let him go when the time comes. Hoping and praying your happy memories will comfort you.

Somebody told me that if it is an English golden retriver, it has a much better chance of not getting this dreadful disease..I was told that it is mostly found in the american Golden...Don't know if this is true...

We just went thru this horrible experience just before Christmas, one day our Oliver was fine, and the next he had to have immediate surgery and they removed a 9 and 1/2 lb tumor from wrapped around his spleen...There was another small tumor in his prostate, they couldn't remove, he would have been incontinent...He recovered pretty well, but then went quickly down hill. He made it exactly 8 weeks after the surgery to the day...we are still just devastated....My vet told me that it is found in large dogs, (Oliver was 8 yrs. old), and while he was ill, I heard from friends that several of them or they knew people that had lost their golden"s and golden doodles to this awful disease...We put him down, and I cradled him in my arms....I knew we did the right thing, but I am not sure I will ever get over the loss of this special wonderful creature...He was my best friend, and I loved him dearly..My husband was as bad as I was..I know in time the pain will get better, but......My sincere condolences to you...I feel your pain, so many of us have, which I know doesn't make it easier for you right now...We want another dog, but it didn't work out, and I am sure that we will get the right one, Oliver will send him our way....

I am so sorry to hear about your beloved pet.  I lost two of my doodles at what I considered a too young age (one with liver damage and the other with cancer).  I have decided to make urns for our pets and am currently experimenting with making ceramic urns that can be personalized.  I am going to personalize with decals made from photos or paintings.  Did you have your dog euthanized?  Yes, it is a great option, as is cremation.  I had my Hondo with me on my mantle for years but finally buried his remains when we moved to Oregon.  We are doing both ceramics and wooden boxes for remains.  Again, so sorry to hear about your special dog.

Lisa ~ I was so sorry to hear you lost your sweet boy.  It is so heartbreaking and our group has lost too many sweet doodles in the last year.
