UGH...I have the cleanest smelliest doodle in Michigan, I think!:( Shaggy had his first and hopefully his LAST encounter with a skunk last Friday. Right away I soaked him in Nature's Miracle Skunk Order Remover, had to let it dry then bathed him in a mix of peroxide, baking soda, & dawn dish soap. He smelled better but still had a skunky smell to him. Today I bathed him again first in feminine wash (an old timers country remedy), then in the peroxide soap mix. Shaggy is beautifully clean, fluffy, and PH balanced. BUT, there is still a tiny hint of skunk smell on his head :-( Next week both dogs go for a full trim. I hope when the groomer is done all the smell will be gone I just hope we don't have to shave him super short!!! Anyone know of a skunk repellant???

Oh my Joanna, 4 months!!! I sure hope the smell goes away much sooner than that!! He may have to be shaved nearly naked next week if he still smells as much ad he does now.
Karen, my advice to anyone with the potential of an encounter with a skunk is to have a couple bottles of Nature's Miracle Skunk Oder Remover on hand and 2 or more qts of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda & dawn dish soap. I always sniff before letting them out but the nasty buggers come out of nowhere and by the time you smell them it's too late!
F, I will look up BT. I'll need to check into its safety for chickens who roam free part of the day.
Ricki, you are right getting sprayed myself would have been sooo much more worse. I can put Shaggy in his crate or the other room if the smell gets overwhelming, but where would I go when I can't stand myself :-/ I sure hope he's learned his lesson about skunks!!!

It sounds like you are doing about all that can be done to remedy the situation. Been there, done that but I got hit too and it was tough knowing who smelled because it totally numbs your sense of smell. :(

I live in fear of this. We have skunks everywhere, I see them crossing my front lawn at night, and just about every other dog in the neighborhood has been sprayed, but so far JD has escaped that. One good thing about having a dog who refuses to go out in the yard at night.

Maddie has been sprayed twice. Sorry to disappoint you but the smell will linger for quite a while, esp when they get wet.

Zoe and Ben got skunked back in February.  I did almost everything you mentioned but they would smell when their fur got damp.  They no longer smell as of the last grooming which was a couple of weeks ago :)

oh dear-not pleasant.  Thank goodness he is de-fuming, even if slowly.

Sorry poor shaggy had this run in. although I haven't seen any in years I am convinced skunks still get in the yard and dig up grubs. Using Bt to kill grubs may help but it is not an immediate process since it works by infecting the grubs. It is natural and safe though.

Poor Shaggy and the whole family!!! Hope that fragrance is completely gone soon.

Oh that is not good at all, poor Shaggy:(   Sounds like you did all the right things to get the smell out, but wow, that is a lot of work too!  I would not have a clue what to do, but I wrote all your remedies down "just in case"!  We live by a river bed and they come up into the neighborhood at times. So happy Shaggy smells better now:)

I am so sorry about the skunk encounter. I worry about this since we live in the country. Yuck! Sounds like you did a great job of de-skunking :) Good luck!
