I like this fellow's career advice columns although I am surely not looking for a career. This week he talks about something that really bothers me in others and yet to some degree I too suffer from technology obsession. Is DK included I wonder? Anyway here is a link to an article to ponder.

His Commentary II was on communication skills in young folks, another bugaboo for me.

The first commentary was on Gen V, as in virtual:

All in all I wonder what people are becoming. Are they losing the ability to connect without devices? Losing the ability to speak in sentences? Where is all this leading us? Yet, this follows Cheryl's blog about our DK community and the friendships we've made and all we have learned from being here. Something to think about anyway. And yes, like the author I risk coming off as an old curmudgeon. My sister sent me this cartoon a while back after I had a spat with a cousin, one generation after me, who was checking out not one, but two phones, as we waited for dinner. It made me laugh and is apropos for this blog and for dog owners I think.

Interesting comments and articles. What gave me a giggle is the FB note just under the comment bar:
Follow - Email me when people comment
yes, instant gratification! guilty. although I have never opted for the above, I get too many emails already!
I don't use abbreviations often. I tend to write regular sentences, though I try to keep them short. And I don't text that much. I mostly check the internet and email a million times a day. But I DO prefer texting to talking over the phone (unless I want a real conversation vs. just a quick exchange of info--I hate calling and being called over something that would be easily texted because it's not a convo or real catching up as much as a quick exchange of info).
I may be somewhat strange unique in that I don't love texting people - I'd much rather talk in person or call. It kind of drives my siblings and friends batty - but I hate abbreviating words and it's such a hard and emotionless form of communication. I'm a big proponent of using full sentences and correct spelling, and because of this I've earned a reputation as being cranky about "younguns" and "technology" ha ha.
Interesting read F!
Guilty. Very. Very. Guilty. I think a large part of it is is the immediate gratification reward system. I'm just so frequently and quickly rewarded for it...and then again...and again. It's wonderful and horrible. I'm not addicted to technology but to the oh-so-immediate gratification I get from checking DK and FB 3,567 times a day :-D Between keeping up with friends, with ideas, with parenting articles, with mommy groups, discussing, reading, responding, posting/sharing, etc....you never run out of stuff. And yet it also makes it very daunting because you can NEVER catch up with it all. I rarely just sit, idly or watch tv or a movie without my laptop or computer. And cooking and cleaning the kitchen is way more enjoyable if I can watch Hulu at the same time. So so bad and so so good :-D
I'm stealing this!
I don't IM but I do text. If I didn't text I would never hear from the younger members of my family. At least there is communication with IMing or texting but it still - like we have had happen on dk - can lead to misinterpretation of responses because of the lack of voice inflection.
