Sophie Comes Home

We lost our wonderful Clay last year, suddenly after 14 years. He was a very aloof border collie/chow mix. We loved him dearly. He loved my husband and tolerated my affections intermittently. I had lately been surfing the web, researching different breeds, thinking that maybe we were ready to get a new addition. I really wanted to adopt a dog from a rescue or local shelter. A friend alerted me to an ad. It listed a female goldendoodle at a very minimal cost. The attached picture showed her standing on her hind legs against a chain link fence in a very small pen. I called immediately. The seller said that the dog had belonged to her daughter but came to her when the daughter moved into an apartment. She was unable to keep her inside as her house was too small. Her name was Sophie. The temperatures here had been very frigid and I was so concerned about her. I couldn't stop worrying about her. I left work the next day at noon to check on her.

She was a mess, dirty and matted from head to toe, but undeniably gorgeous. She was so excited to be out of the pen, wriggling and squirming, I could barely get a good look at her. She was wildly affectionate and didn't seem to be fearful at all. She had a laceration on the right side of her head with a large matted scabbed area. I knew more snow and cold temperatures were in the forecast. I just could not leave her. The seller said she was due for her shots but had no vet records. I paid the money, coaxed her into my pickup truck with some treats and away we went. She reeked, of what I am not sure, but the smell was so bad I had to intermittently stick my head out the window to get some fresh air. She laid across the bench seat with her head in my lap for the hour long ride. She traveled exceptionally well. I called my husband at work and gave him the news. He was reluctantly enthusiastic. He asked all the right questions but I didn't know the answers - how was her health, was she spaid, was she housebroken . . . I could only reassure him that she was absolutely lovable. . .

Sophie is so lucky to have found you, just as you are lucky to have found her. Do you believe in fate? It always amazes me that people can treat animals so poorly and still sleep at night. Quincy and I send you a big doodle hug and a thank you for saving Sophie years of misery.

This is like a wonderful book and I am anxiously awaiting chapter two. I am so glad you took a chance on Sophie. Whose house is too small for one dog??
