We left the story as we were on the way home. After the call to my husband, our vet was next on the contact list. Just my luck-no room at the inn. They were booked up for the next few days. Nothing left to do but call in reinforcements. My mother in law wrangled an appointment with her vet and groomer for early the next morning. This was no small feat since her dog is uh let's just say "well known" in local animal care circles. Daisy is three pounds of Mr Hyde wrapped in a pound of poodle fur. They schedule the local WWF wrestling team to assist when she is on the appointment book. My sister in law volunteered to bring supplies and go hands-on with the initial "get the stink off so you can sleep in the house tonight" bath. Okay, okay, I guess you've caught on by now, I'm sorry, I admit it, I was petting Sophie and speed dialing while driving. I tried to keep at least one hand on the wheel most of the time. I normally avoid such dangerous behaviors but desperate times call for desperate measures. The rancid odor and the open wound demanded action. Finally, we arrived home. We both bolted from the truck, me in dire need of breathable air and she to begin the sniff fest. Once around the backyard, do the business and straight to the bathroom. I began by "plucking the low hanging fruit" as it were, all the huge mats dragging the ground. She was so docile and accepted the care so gratefully. I think it was at that moment I knew what a find she was. She stretched out on the rug, occasionally giving me a sweet, gentle swipe of the tongue, lifting each of her legs obligingly as I carefully trimmed the messiest bits. I inspected her head to toe. The mats had caused some skin irritation in several areas including her feet and her tummy. Her ears were a little erythemic and the crusty scab on her head looked like a wound from a broken bottle brawl at the local watering hole. The seller had attributed this laceration to a run in with a fence??
Not a moment too soon sis-in-law, aka Lifesaver, arrives bearing gifts - food, treats, toys, shampoo, brushes etc. Sophie had no difficulty recognizing this friend as a true animal lover. We filled the tub and in she went with only a little coaxing (and a treat of course). She stood patiently while we suds and scrubbed and rinsed. Only showering us a couple of times with a vigorous shimmy. I tried some gentle brushing after the bath but the tangles were just too much. At least she could meet her "daddy" smelling a little sweeter. We let her explore the house a little as we waited for him to arrive. He had already called several times to get updates. He arrived a little later than usual but I understood as he walked through the door - he had stopped off for some special treats . . .
