Okay, I read “Inside of a Dog” so should have a reasonable understanding of what a powerful tool a dog’s nose is. However, what Gavin did recently astounded me! Here is what happened:
I had a big retirement party for my DH on Saturday. He received several gifts and at least a dozen greeting cards from well-wishers. On Sunday DH sat down in his comfy chair to begin opening the cards. Out of nowhere Gavin rushed into the room and plunged his head into the cards in DH’s lap. Jokingly, DH fanned out the cards and asked Gavin which one he should open first. Gavin nosed his way through the cards and fixated on one in particular with growing excitement. DH opened the card and Gavin grabbed the envelope, ran across the room and began shredding it with fevered excitement.
Guess who the card was from? Gavin’s BFF Mylie’s parents!
I got the envelope away from Gavin and he ran back to nose through the rest of the cards in DH’s lap and Gavin “selected” the next card to be opened, stole the envelope and ran across the room.
Guess who that card was from? Gavin’s other BFF Daisy’s parents!
After I got that envelope away from him, he lost interest in the rest of the card opening process and asked to go outside instead. Maybe he was checking to see if his buddies were hiding outside?
These animals really amaze me!
P.S. Here is a picture of the cake I had made for DH crossing the bridge from police life to cottage life. Is that a dead ringer for Gavin or what?

Thanks Bonnie, but I did not make the cake. I did "design" it and the very talented cake-maker executed my very rudimentary drawing!
What an amazing dog Gavin is! I was playing hide and seek with brand new exciting treats in my hand. Neither dog found me with just the smell of the treats... I had to call them. WTD??? That is one impressive cake missy! When can I start watching your Food Channel cake decorating show?
