Muscle Weighs More Than Fat!

I took Gavin to the vet’s to get his heartworm/lymes test and Revolution meds.  First step of course was to have him weighed.  I thought there must be some kind of mistake and had him re-weighed.  The number on the scale:  73.8 lbs!  That is a full 7 lbs more than he weighed at his last check up in October!  I was in a state of disbelief.  The kind receptionist tried to sooth me by saying “maybe he is just carrying a little extra winter weight.”  How could I tell her, that last week I was on DK bragging about Gavin’s athletic physique?  “Well he is not fat, that’s for sure!” she said.  The vet echoed her sentiments saying that Gavin is very tall and he is in excellent shape.  I remained a bit stunned – he had gained over a pound a month!  In a last ditch effort to appease me the receptionist said “well you know, muscle weighs more than fat!”  Yes, true, I have been telling myself that for years!

 

The good news is his tests came back negative.

BMI is not accurate for people with a higher percentage of lean mass, like bodybuilders.

Definitely a perfect looking dog to me!  Karen...Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that way your BMI score isn't the best way to determine if you are a healthy weight or not...Some people (like me) are just pure muscle (smile), so my BMI is higher...At least that's what I keep telling myself!

Gavin looks great, and yes, muscle does weigh more than fat. In fact, the gold standard for body composition testing used to be (might still be, I've been retired for awhile) hydrostatic body fat testing in water, so the faster you sink, the more lean mass you have; fat floats. It's not just the number on the scale. :)

I'm glad he had a good checkup and the tyests were negative.

Wow, so he IS tall. Gavin is about 3 inches taller that Monty. So perhaps Monty is the fatso here.  I guess I will have to look when he gets his haircut next time. I love Gavin's look!

I only worry about my weight when I have to start buying bigger pants, so until that happens for Gavin, he should be good.  :)
