Jess had a bad day yesterday. Add to pulmonary edema, a little pneumonia, and strep from in his sputum and a rise in temperature. He had been gasping for air and has been placed on a pressure ventilation device.
When I arrived at Mayo after my stress test, Jess was greeting me with a half raised arm. As I walked over to the bed, he pulled me in, and with the best of his ability gave me a hug and patted my back. His step-mom and son also visited today, but the day was ours. Jess was peaceful while I sat by his side, holding his hand, and at times, conversing with his fabulous nurse. Trish was upbeat and positive. She said he was the miracle of Mayo! Jess could always use another cheer leader.
The doctor whipped by and alerted me that the insurance company wanted Jess moved to UCLA. A million obstacles flooded my mind. “I can’t move to L.A.” – the doctor told me if I knew the bill, it would be more cost effective to continue the care in L.A. I felt Jess needed to continue his treatment at Mayo. As the doctor walked away, I called out, “See if you can finagle something!”
I walked into the lobby area to make some calls. The doctor found me and said they may be able to work something out. A case worker met me and it turns out that Jess’s insurance company would accept Mayo as in-network. The funny thing is, when Jess was talking about dove feathers, he had mentioned something about his company picking up Mayo. I had mentioned this to a gal in the finance department and she said that was not true. I figured it was his delirium.
I just called to wish him a good night and the night nurse told me his blood pressure is reading low. I know it could be a kink in the tube from him raising his hand, but it is being watched. I really want to go in tomorrow and have a great report. He needs to be moving in one direction and one direction only.
My dog walkers/neighbors fed me and got me a tad drunk (I’m a cheap date) tonight. I am going to grab Phoebe and Hobbes and try get a good night’s rest. Hope you all do the same.
