Wow, is there a rule posted in the Doodle Book of Rules that says 'Thou shalt start blowing puppy coat and mat'? The day Harlow hit 8 months it was like instant matting. I have been brushing her every other day. I finally had to convert to the thinning shears and comb. Her ears were the worst. It took me quite a while to work through the mats. We had to take a play break after each ear. I swear I got enough hair from her ears to probably assemble a small cat.

We kept taking a play break after each appendage. Right front leg, play break. Left front leg, play break, so on and so on. She was so pretty and soft when we were done. Now a day or two of rest and we will repeat.

How long does this transition last?

There are products that help with the matting - the silicone-based shampoos and de-matters. I have both a LesPouches and imitation (MGT) slicker brush. I also use a steel comb. These products and tools are essential but Ned HATES being brushed and disappears when he sees the grooming basket. My husband holds him while I brush. Right now he LOOKS wonderful, all doodley with spiral curls and waves. His cotton undergrowth is matted and we spend hours trying to comb it out. For a brief month this summer, we thought we had it licked and the mats were gone, but sadly it was an illusion. We also have decided to get him groomed monthly - our groomer doesn't charge an arm and a leg, but he needs grooming every three weeks. When she groomed him in June he was fairly short and then she has been letting him grow out but thins it. This is just not working right now, so he will be off to the groomer Saturday. We will not have him shaved but scissor cut to about 3/4 to 1". One thing about the shorter coat is it shows off his cute little athletic body. He is 1 1/2 and I will pray for a change in coat but I sure won't place any money bets on that hope.

I so much wanted to keep Charlie's coat long and nice. I hated the fact that I had to give in and get it cut really short... But you know what? I think she looks really cute with the new hair cut, too.!!

I am going to shave Dakota, he is so full of mats and we brush everyday. He is curly and woolly. Choco is fleecy and he is turning 12 mos, now I am finding a little matting, under his collar and under his arms. But we brush them out. The one around the collar and ears are the worst. I think I will shave his neck.

At 11 months Lucy matted over night. I was sooooo faithfull at brushing, and then it happened. There is NOTHING you can do about it, except clip them down close until it is passed. Lucy was over this at just about 14 months. Now don't get me wrong, after they are through this, you still have to continue brushing and grooming freq. or you will still find matts. I broke down and spent the $75 for a Les Pooche brush and that is the only thing that works on Lucy. She absolutely loves being brushed with it. I brush her a couple of times/week and she goes to the groomers just about quarterly and the groomer is very pleased with the condition her fur is in. AND, yes, under the arms, behind the ears and her tail are the most important parts to watch for mattiing. I always have the groomer clip behind the ears and under the arms very close. Good luck, hang in there, and happy brushing. It is good bonding for you and your dog.

I need to throw my two cents into the complaint well, too. Phoebe started matting at 7.5 months and we have have gone downhill from there. Naively, I thought I could keep up with it as I thought, once the mat was out, it stayed out of that area for a while because it was well brushed. Okay, stop laughing!!! Our groomer thinks we are doing a great job but she does not know the torture it is to do so. All Phoebe has to hear is the cabinet opening where I keep the dematter and all heck breaks loose. What a nightmare job. She was groomed last Thursday and my son told me that he felt as mat under her chin this morning...I could just cry!

Nancy's so right. Way too long. Sometimes forever. Luca is 18 months old and though his puppy coat is long gone he still gets mat's in his very fine spiral fleece coat.

LOL Nancy! Please tell me it isnt so.
I got great advice in the grooming group; " when it becomes no longer enjoyable for you or your dog, when it becomes a chore, shave them down for both of your sakes."
In July, when this first began I decided that I was going to fight it and win. I worked so hard I pulled the skin right off Spuds ears :( Now it is almost impossible to convince Spud that we are going to have a nice hour of calmly brushing out his coat. He really wants nothing more to do with the brush. I can only approach him at min intervals.
Good Luck Nina. Take the advice I recieved above. I wished I had asked for it earlier.

FORRRRRRRREEEEEEEVVVVVVEEEEEERRRRRR!!!!!!!! Ned began matting at 6 months and still mats. I thought for a short while in July that his fur was going to mat less but NOPE, it was an illusion. He mats and if we miss 2 days of brushing, watch=out! Not all doods mat forever, I wish you a silky=fur future.

Charlie started around 8 months as well. I ended up spending an hour / hour and half each day taking her matts a part. It was a never ending story, because no matter how much time I spent to comb out the matts, she was getting matted all over just as quickly as I comb them out. I finally gave in and got her hair cut for the first time... ( She has been groomed and had her face done, but never had her body cut.) The worst parts were underarms. I guess because it was difficult for me to comb / brush there....Now, she look more like a poodle, and she was cold when she first got a hair cut. She slept curled up instaed of stretching out.

Just got done here too. It started July 15th and it is still going strong at 10 months. It used to be the feet. legs, and ears. Now it has moved to the neck, tail, and underarms. Maybe it only mats in one area and it is done???? Gawd I hope so. Good Luck to us all.
