This is one of my favorite rules: Breaking the rules!

Rules of photo composition: rule of thirds, framing, simplicity, leading lines, empty space and shapes. Don’t be afraid to break these rules — always following the “rules” will result in uniform, and sometimes mundane photos but it’s important that you understand the rules before you break them! Nothing new can come if we all do the same thing. Sure, these rules and tips have a reason for existing, they are often the recommended way of doing things because they are tested and have shown that they work in most situations, but that doesn’t mean you should always follow them.

So true Karen!! I am a writer of sorts professionally. One of the first things I explain to aspiring college interns is, "You must learn how to write correctly BEFORE you adopt your own writing style!!" --Same as knowing the rules before you break them!

I don't know much about photography, but you sound a lot like an art teacher I had many years ago! "It’s important that you understand the rules before you break them!" was one of his favorite sayings.

Yes, I have seen many photos that have broken the rules and are wonderful. I remember in high school I loved taking photos that had purposefully placed mergers... such fun! They were ridiculous photos though... I have a lot to learn. :-)
