Even thougth Charlie will comply with grooming as long as she has her Kong with favorite stuffing, she was never a fond of being groomed. I always have to hurry up and rush through while the supplies ( Kong stuffing ) lasted.
Now she is 8 months old, matting stage has started... I even thought about sending her to Roxanne - groomer - since she is really good with her. But that will not be good for my finance!

During this dilema, my son told me this....
" Ma, you just don't know how to brush people's hair. You always try to yank somebody's head off! Remember, I used to always try to run away from you? If I was Charlie, I don't want you to brush me either!"
OK, so it's me....

Well, today, I was going to be very gentle and not to become task oriented.
And BAM!!
I don't know how it happened, but with gentle brushing, she discovered that being brushed feels good.
She eventually sat down, lie down, and even fell asleep!
OMG. This was so good!! So I continued to brush and got all of the matts out!!
She even went on her back, deep into sleep and I got to brush her chest, stomach, arm pits and all!!

I ended up brushing her for two hours while she enjoyed this touchy feely for that long.
I think it really gave her a great experience for being brushed.
I have to thank my son for the constructive criticism :-)

I have probably been guilty of brushing too hard as well. After reading all the matting stories on DK I have been terrified of Harlow getting mats as she gets closer to the 8 month mark. Thanks for this story. Tonight is brushing night for Harlow. I am glad I read this story first.

Very nice story Kyoko. I know how Charli would just love this. I have the Les Pooch brush and all I have to do is get it out and Lucy comes right to me and lays down to get brushed. The funny think she does though, she just loves to have her bum scratched or brushed and will almost stand on her head as I am doing her backside. I wish I could get a pic of this it is halarious (?sp.)

Oh and Kyoko--thank your son! LuvMyAbby&Kaela Thank You too! It was your statement that sealed the deal for me. LOL After all the battles and tears in my home about hair, I promised my son's I would take them to a barber and never touch them again!!!!!!!!!! EVER.
I think I was wrong but did not know it till now.
You all saved me from my dog. He thanks you too! No more Rushy, Pushy, Pully groomer from now on.

Intimacy Grooming. Boy did you make me think, Today, I tried your method of grooming and what a joy for both Spud and I. :)

I think I was a rusher and pusher and a puller. I made it a chore and not an enjoyable experience. I was dreading the next groom since I completely shaved him. But today went perfect. He enjoyed this so much. Thanks, your posting SAVED US BOTH. We were both miserable with grooming. What a nice day we had. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for posting your blog

I never really liked that slicker brush, because I thought it would hurts. But using it softly is what did it, I think.
I never thought this - Charlie enjoying being brushed - was going to happen, so I am sooo happy!!!

Kids are so honest and so smart. I am trying to get Finn to enjoy being brushed while he is young. Slow and steady.

Nicely done Kyoko. Penny doesn't run away when I brush her, she just wriggles, squirms, jumps about, and chews on my hand while I try and restrain her, consequently I try and rush it, which of course doesn't help because that just gets her even more skittish. I will try and be calmer and softer when I do it. I use one of those wire brushes, although it was recommended to me, not sure if that's the right tool...any advice?
