Hello all. It seems that I am always here when I have medical news to report about Cooper, but somehow I just feel it is important to share his story and if it helps convince others who might be on the fence about getting pet insurance to take that step, then it is worth it.
Cooper had surgery today. He tore his ACL. We are now calling him our million dollar dog. He hasn't really reached that much in expenses, but it seems that way. :-) Poor dog has been through so much with his liver problem and now to have this surgery to go through.
On top of that, we asked for his teeth to be cleaned while he was under anesthesia. He is at an increased risk for complications anytime he has medications, so it was a reasonable request. They called and told us that his molar had a fracture and needed to be pulled. Dang it! Vet said the Antlers he loves probably caused it. No more Antlers. She has seen a lot of these types of teeth fractures since Antlers have become a popular chew.
Cooper has been resting comfortably since we picked him up this evening. My husband has taken a couple of days off work to tend to him, since my mother is also having surgery tomorrow.
We are so grateful that we decided to invest in PetPlan Insurance when we got him as a puppy. While we do have a deductible and a co-pay, it helps us tremendously when it comes to paying for his expenses and making decisions about his care. Please, if you are on the fence about getting insurance for your pet, just do it. You never know when your dog will end up with an injury like Cooper has now. He was running in the back yard. Happily playing. Probably zigged when he should have zagged and next thing we knew, he was laying there and wouldn't get up, because he was in so much pain.
Thanks for reading and "listening". :-)
Update, 10-30-2014
9 days later and Cooper is doing great! He has been to 3 physical therapy sessions and is putting weight on his leg now. The biggest problem is keeping him quiet and confined, so he doesn't hinder his progress. Thank you everyone for the kind words. And Mom. She is back at her Rehabilitation Facility and hopefully on the road to recovery too. We are facing a struggle there....

Just saw your post Martha. I hope Cooper's ACL heals on schedule. Sometimes, when it rains, it pours. Hoping all is back in sync soon and Cooper is feeling his old self! Keep us posted.
Feel better and heal quickly, Cooper! We just passed week 8 for Libby (same procedure). She's doing really well and feeling like herself - so much so that I swear she is bored out of her mind. But not much that we can do about it for at least a few more weeks. Hope things go well for you guys too!
I am so glad that Cooper is recovering. Here is an added push for people to get pet insurance. Our Springer Spaniel has had 2 CCL (ACL in humans) surgeries and sundry other health problems and we don't have pet insurance on him - he really is our ten thousand dollar dog!
Poor boy! I hope he is feeling better and eating better soon.
Poor Cooper. I hope he heals quickly. Your mom too.
I hope Cooper has an easy recovery and your mom's surgery goes well.
Thanks everyone. Cooper is recovering nicely, except he doesn't want to eat. He started his rehab today and I am anxious to hear how that goes. Lucy and Annabelle, he had the suture procedure, since he only weighs 35 lbs., his Vet thought he would do fine with it. We talked about going to Columbus for the TPLO, but decided against it, for several reasons.
Poor Cooper! Hugs to both of you.
Oh my. Sorry about Cooper but sure glad she has your care. Nice to see you out there Martha.
Hugs and love to Cooper!
