Recently, my mom came to stay for a week and took up residence in our spare bedroom. Vern and Fudge love their “grandma”. The only problem we seem to have when she is here is that Vern and my mom fight for the same chair in the living room. I have tried telling my 85-year-old mom that it is Vern’s chair, but she just said, “Old trumps dog,” and sat right down. There she stayed drinking her coffee and reading her book without a care in the world, as Vern circled the chair like a piranha. Sometimes, he and Fudge tag teamed her, but she would not budge. Unfortunately for Vern, my mom can be wily and would start petting Fudge on the top of the head and before you know it, Fudge forgot all about helping Vern.
Or was she holding her in place against her will? Look at the grip she has on Fudge’s neck. I think the jury is still out on this one.
One morning, after she had asked me to top off her coffee for the third time so she did not have to get up, I might have mentioned that this was not IHOP and in fact a self serve establishment. After that, she started complaining that her leg was going numb from the weight of Vern’s head and could I make him stop staring at her so intensely. It was obvious to everyone, but Vern, that she was not going to share that chair. She used every excuse in the book…”I’ve lost all feeling in my legs. I’m afraid if I stand up, I might fall. The doctor said he doesn’t want me to get up from a sitting position too fast. The long flight has really worn me out.” Poor Vern did not care. He just wanted his chair.
Sure she looks nice in this picture, but I think she just finished telling Vern, “There is not a chance in hell, you are getting this chair while I am here!”
Meanwhile, I knew enough to just bide our time, because all that coffee she drank had to make a reappearance sometime and I know from watching Law and Order that possession is nine-tenths of the law. She tried to be slick before she excused herself and told Vern as she vacated the chair, “I’ve got dibs on the chair, Blondie,” but I could just tell Vern was thinking, “Try and move me lady!” after he slithered up in place.
However, she had one more trick up her sleeve. She waited until my DH came home and made sure he could hear her say, “Vern, if you don’t move from that chair, I am going to stay for another week and make you wish you had.” Right after she said that, my DH made Vern get down and made sure he did not get up there again.
Looks like she is gloating a little in this picture, doesn't it?

Lisa, I posted a comment about poor mistreated Daisy's bed....forced to sleep in a too small bed...just kidding. Of course, she prefers that bed....it is all broken in and smells just right. LOL
I was confused about the link...what am I looking at when I get there?? Thanks for thinking of me, even if I am too dense to know what to do :)
I love the fact that Vern loves this chair, did you see the bed picture of Daisy - one new big one and then yesterday found her in the old "IMO" too small bed, so content?
I found this in my email box this morning....maybe the writer in you could do more.
Thanks, Lisa. Vern also has our new leather sofa to recline on and seems quite happy with the size of that piece of furniture. Personally, I wish he would use one of the two dog beds in our living room instead :)
Nancy, My mom would be happy to know you side with her :)
Angie, If my mom hula hoops in this house and falls....well, that would mean a longer visit and less chair time for Vern and surely you can see the problem...LOL! I forgot about the lawn chair.
Caitlin, Where have you been? Thanks for the comments.
Karen, You do have a soft spot for that Vern, don't you???
Too funny! Love the photos! Tell your mom that the only way she gets her own chair is to bring her own LAWN CHAIR or if she is feeling spunky, she could hoola hoop near the chair....... :)
