It is a beautiful day here in Arizona.

Jesse’s best friend and wife arrived to Mayo in the morning. Frank called with happy tears -- his friend seemed alert and his expressions were tell-tale that he comprehends. Frank had told Jess about Obama’s “Special Olympic” comment and Jess’s face registered like, “Oh, did he screw up!” Frank was so thrilled because it showed that Jess did not need further explanation, he realized what a faux pa the pres made which meant Jess did not need to pause to think. He clearly understood.

I stopped by my sister’s house where I had left Jess’s glasses (plenty of action with three kids and a sheepdog). Gail followed me up to Mayo in her car so she can get back to ferry the kids from activity, to party, etc.

I entered the room first and Jess lit up – his green/hazel eyes widened and I could detect a surprised smile beneath the tubes. When my sister entered the room you could tell that he was so pleased to see her. Jess was fully aware that his friends had been in earlier. He is coming out of sedation and we communicate with head shakes and eye movement. He was not tracking yesterday – today, undeniably. I showed him that I have been wearing his wedding band around my neck “close to my heart.” When I asked him if he wanted to get married again and redo our vows when he was well, he very much shook his head yes! (I added that he did not need to buy me another ring).

Friend Frank had to go back again tonight, as did our nephew. Frank called again, so very happy to be hanging out with his buddy, even if he was horizontal with tubes in and out of him. It is amazing to see where we have come in one month.

We are by no means out of the woods but the progress from last week to this is powerful. The nurse told Jess he was the sickest man at Mayo three weeks ago and now he is a miracle. Wow. Jess was shocked to learn he had a heart attack. He does not remember walking the dogs by the park, paramedics, or ER. He may in time, but this is not important.

Medication is being monitored and we don’t know how he will do when/ if they take him off the ventilator. His forehead was perspiring when I got in there but his temp was not terribly high. They are watching him very carefully. The last time I checked he was watching Obama on 60 Minutes. Imagine that?

Like I said, it is a beautiful day here in Arizona.
