Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Oski had his first visit with the vet today. In his usual form, he snuffled his way happily into the clinic & charmed everyone. Still waiting on his routine blood work & the ever so fun "so fresh it's steaming stool test" but otherwise got a clean bill of health including bright pearly whites...EXCEPT that he's 79lb, a whopping 4lbs overweight! Now, don't get me wrong. I should only be so grateful that he's eaten enough to be considered overweight if only marginally. This is the same pooch that as a puppy had me almost tearing my hair out because he would spit out food that he previously liked. The same one that would go on a hunger strike until he bonked at the dog park. Yeah, that's right. The same dastardly doodle who refused to eat his food until I put salmon oil & cheese in it. Somehow, by some minor miracle involving lots of partially finished dog food bags, jettisoned food cans, & a brief stint at home cooking we've stumbled across a regimen he will consistently eat (Merrick or Natural Balance kibble + plant enzymes/probiotics + salmon oil + 2 TBSP Evanger's canned food mixed together).

So now I can honestly call him "fatty" & will have cut down on people food/snacks [read: harden my heart to those soulful brown eyes]. Good thing my portly pooch loves hiking, swimming, snowshoeing, & going to the dog park, LOL

This is food, excuse the play on words, for my Beatrice's soul!  She is 2 1/2 and we could have bought a vacation home on all the dog foods we have tried for this princess' palate!  Two months ago she went on a hunger strike for two and one-half days because she decided the food she had been "woofing" down for three months was no longer acceptable to her.  The "if she gets hungry enough she will eat" theory is lost on this beauty.  She became so sick from not eating that we sped her to the vet for analysis. After several tests, she was determined to be horse healthy, but topping the scale quite impressively (Beatrice is a medium goldendoodle)  We determined "the stinkier" the better for her food (so much for the princess part) and since she has never been a kibble lover (to get her to eat kibble it must be topped with something more yummy), we began offering her canned "Wholesome Farm" (5/5 from dog  food advisor) and she loves it.  Only problem....her business is not ... well ... pick-up-able.  Now what?  She hates pumpkin (will literally lick the canned food off the top of the pumpkin or refuse the entire bowl if she smells a hint of the orange stuff).  We are desperate to find common ground - food she will eat - that results in "good business".  Oh, and possibly yumminess that won't cause her furry-self to...um...be so fluffy! :)
