I have 4 children, a husband, 2 cats and 2.5 doodles. (My son at college has a doodle that lives here part time!). In 2007 my life changed forever when my 18 year old son died in a car accident and became an organ donor. He saved 7 lives and enhanced over 150 lives with the gift of tissues. Also in 2007 I got my first doodle. A rescue doodle who had lived with 3 families. She was meant for me...she has a Hawaiian name, Keiki. She helped me get through some really tough times as we made it through the first holidays without Tim. Then I got another rescue doodle who is much more poodle like.
I have since taken many obedience classes and found that we all like Rally Obedience a lot!
What Type of Doodle(s) do you have? What are their names? Tell us about your doodle(s) or any other pets you have!
Doodle #1
Keiki (Hawaiian for child) She is a first generation and sheds. Her coat is grey and wiry, but her head and facial furs are very soft. She is wild and loves people. She is very athletic and can catch anything. We are working on her Rally Novice title and have 2 legs so far. She is extremely sweet and loves to flop down next to you on the couch or in bed and demands to be pet!! She is definitely the alpha.
Doodle #2
Marley--He was a rescue who lived on a farm and was not used to living inside or being with men. He is jet black with a white streak on his chest and tight poodle curls. His coat was nearly all dreadlocks when I got him. The first order of business was shaving him down. He was 7 months old and very sweet, but skittish. It was good that he had Keiki to lead him. It has taken 2 years, but he is finally liking men. He has some issues with other dogs, but it's related to his own lack of confidence. We are working hard on obedience and he is great obedience dog. He is very precise and eager to please. I just don't trust him yet with a long sit or long down. He is very silly and has lots of the poodle silly in him!
Doodle #2.5
Ari--A shelter doodle who we got at around 6 months. He is a beautiful doodle who lives with my son at MSU. He would really benefit from some obedience classes, but he is a very sweet dog. He and Marley do not get along at all, but are working out their relationship. He is white and has a thick coat, not curly but wavy. He does not shed.
Where did you get your doodle(s)?
Shelter, Rescue
Why did you choose a doodle rather than another breed or mix?
I grew up with miniature poodles and love poodles, but wanted either a standard or a doodle. I thought the mix of a retriever and poodle would be great--a little more sturdy big dog with the smarts of both breeds and the loyalty of a retriever.
What are Your Favorite Things to Do With Your Doodles?
Going to obedience classes with them! They love going out and enjoy the one on one attention at class (along with the treats!). I also love going for walks in the woods with them.
Does your doodle(s) shed?
A little bit but nothing major
Who grooms your doodle(s)?
A professional groomer
