Aside from the fact that it would be bad for him to ingest all the dirt and debris that collects on the wet ball when it goes into the bushes or hits the bare spots in the yard, he is a slobber machine. You could wring that ball out! The towel protects one's clothing, too.

The towel is also his signal that we're going to play ball. I use one for fetch indoors, too. If I sit down with a towel in my lap, it means "Game on". Otherwise, he would be dropping balls into the laps of anyone who is seated in my house or yard, any time. This way, he doesn't drive me and everyone else crazy. No towel, no ball.
