Chewie has always been really great in the car. We always let him sit on the floor in the back seat of the car. Then I learned that was not the best idea, so we purchased a travel crate so that he would be more secure. Well I tried it four times and every sick time he was in the crate he got carsick. So we moved him back to the floor in the back seat. Well yesterday I went to take him in the car and now he is big enough to get on the back seat by himself and got sick all over my seat. Any suggestions on how to keep him on the floor and hopefully not get carsick??
I'll be watching this! Tori gets sick in the car, but (not to sound gross), but now she has changed from vomiting to well... pooping!!! YUK. Thank goodness we have the rubber mats on the floor of the car, but the first time this happened was in the heat of the summer. We had her in the back of our minivan, with the seats down. Well I have found that the back of the seats were VERY hard to clean off. And of course, she went in the ONLY spot where I had removed the headrests and the "gaps" no longer existed. What a clean up. Now we put down a plastic table cloth just in case. We have learned not to feed her too close to car trips - even if it is just to the groomer. But.... funny thing tho' she loves to get in the car? Go figure!
Oh my goodness, same with my dog. She'll hop right in the care and get all excited to go somewhere but as soon as the car starts moving the drool starts, and she stands all funny like were going to suddenly stop and fling her through the front windshield, and just recently did she poop...so gross. Luckily I had a blanket down that day
Ginger is the answer. I don't remember who on here or the doodle zoo told me about this, but it works. Ginger snaps, gingers hard candy for them to suck on etc. Also, Lucy was always sick in the car at first when I was putting her in her crate on the floor of the van. I one day took her somewhere out of the crate and she did much better when she was able to look around and out the window. She still had alot of drool and then that stopped when I started giving her the ginger. Dramamine also works. Good Luck
Hi Karen,
'Ozzie is now 16 weeks and he's the perfect doodle (aren't they all) we are having trouble with car sickness = it's such a shame,I'm going to try the ginger - there's so many place for us to take him but must get over this sickness first.
Thanks for your advice Lesley.(UK)
Lesley, Ozzie is so beautiful. What kind of doodle is he? We have the car sickness with Tori too. But she has gone from vomtting to pooping. She aactually pooped in the car twice. Now at least she waits until she gets out... I don't know what else to do either. But I am going to try more frequent quick trips just a drive around the neighborhood, as she only really gets in the car to go to the groomer and vet - so I'm thinking she's associating these car trips w/ negative experiences????? We'll see b/c I too would love to take her more places, but I can't have her pooping in the car and in the pet stores, etc.
Hi Shelly,
Ozzie is a F1 standard size or will be when he's fully grown - at the moment he's like Bambi all legs
I was told theses dogs were very intelligent, didn't really belive it (brains and good looks to no way)but
the crafty devil has been watching my husband operate the cold water and ice cube dispenser on the refrigerator door and now helps himself to ice cubes - wondering if I can teach him to make the beds or even do the ironing - They are wonderful dogs - Hope you find something for Tori he looks wonderfull in the picture - if only they could talk!!Love Ozzie and Lesley UK XX
Our vet recommended we used Gravol (dramamine). I bought the childrens liquid version and used a syringe to squirt it down his throat! We only had to use it twice and he stopped getting sick after that. I think they just need a couple of trips without getting sick so that they stop being so anxious about it. Our boy used ot get really sick, he would start droooling, his nose would run, and then he'd throw up. It got so bad that he wouldn't get in the car, we had to lift him in. But, he is good now.
thanks Stella,
I'll go into our chemist tomorrow and get some childrens medication for the car sickness - the symptoms you escribed for your dog is excatley the same for Ozzie.Fingers crossed.Lesley UK.
