Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I know many of you have written about having Muttlucks for your doodles. We are thinking about buying a set for Nugget for her winter walks due to the salt on our roads. I looked though the JB Wholesale catalog today and saw that they carry the Muttlucks. They also carry boots that are much less expensive. Are the Muttlucks really that much better? Has anyone had any success with boots that weren't quite so super deluxe?

Thanks a lot!

I bought my muttluks on ebay for about $28 including shipping.
Thanks for the info! I'll check out ebay. How did you figure out the correct size?
With Muttluks, they run big. They have a sizing guide on their main webpage you can use. Jack is a pretty big doodle and has huge feet, so I was sure he'd need a large or even an extra large. But I tried the boots on him at Petsmart, and he needed a medium...a snug fit is key to the boots staying on their feet.
Karen is right. We printed the sizing guide from their website, and Muppet was between the small and extra-small sizes. So we went to PetSmart to try them on. The extra-small seemed too snug, but the small was just a little big. We decided to get the bigger one to give him room to grow since he is a puppy and still growing. So we have to be sure to cinch the velcro strap tight when we put them on. Since the Muttluks are kind of pricey, I would suggest waiting until your dog is full grown to be sure the get the right size and best fit because that's very important.
Thanks, Karen. although Nuggy weighs 50 lbs and is 23 inches tall at the withers, she has very "petite feet" so she will probably be a small. But we will take her to Petsmart to try them on. For some reason I didn't think they carried them, but glad to hear they do!!

Have a good day.

I haven't personally, but I've spoken with a lot of people who have when we go to dog parks. Many have tried lots of other boots with no success. The main issue or complaint I hear from others is that the boots do not stay on and come off too easily. I figured by the time I try some cheaper ones that are more likely to fall off and get lost, then replace them with another pair, I've spent as much or more than investing in good ones that stay on better from the beginning. Whenever we go to the dog park, other people who have tried other boots are impressed with how well the Muttluks stay on while our dogs run and play together. So I can only speak from what other people have told me about their experience with other boots. Hope that helps.
That's very helpful, thanks! Nugget is full-grown and is 50 lbs, but has very "petite feet" so she will probably be a small. I will take her to Petsmart to try them on. Thanks for all of the advice!!

I don't know if they are cheaper, but we got our boots from Ruffwear. They are even lined and come with socks so that their feet don't rub! They also size a little big, we measured as directed but I feel we could have got away with a smaller size.
You know, I really thought people who had boots for their dog were just a little wacko, or overkill with doggie accessories. Now, I am jealous. It has been 2 weeks since our last walk :(
I am paying attention to this post. I never have before.
You all agree that Muttlucks are the best?
They probably are the best. Some people have had great success with Pawz though and they are MUCH less expensive. They don't stay on Jonas that great but it may be me not putting them on good enough. I have other boots for Sadie that were not that expensive and it's the same story. She usually has at least one or two fall off during a walk in the snow.
I might give the Pawz a try since we are interested in using these for walks on paved roads that have been treated with salt. I don't think she needs them in the snow, where I'm pretty sure the weight of the snow as she ran would just pull them off and we'd be finding doggie boots in the lawn mower next spring!! :-)

Thanks so much!!
Joanne- I totally agree about the wacko thoughts....I thought so, too, but I will tell you that we have noticed that if I don't wash Nugget's feet with warm water after each walk, she is biting at them and then itchy for a good part of the day. And since we walk her about 3 times a day for a mile each time, the foot washing is a bit much. Since it doesn't look like this weather is going to break, I think we're going to make the investment in some boots. My husband doesn't think Nug will keep the boots on for 10 seconds, but we're willing to give them a try. Hope you can get out for a walk soon!!
