When is your doodle's last drink at night? Noah seems to always be thirsty, but I'm having a hard time with him sleeping through the night when I leave water out. I usually take him out at midnight, leave a bowl of water out for him, and by 3am - 4am, he needs to go out again. If I don't leave water out for him, he whines/cries until I get him water. Is it bad to not give him water if he cries for it?
I take Chewie's water up between 7:30 and 8:00 for the night. He goes out for the last time between 10:00 and 10:30 and then is good in his crate until 8:00 - 8:15 am. I've never had a problem doing this as he has never cried for it. When the weather was much warmer, if he had been real active, I would give him some, but always made sure he had at least an hour or so until bedtime to go out again.
I never take the water up, I keep a smaller bowl in our bedroom. Sometimes I get thirsty during the night and like a glass of water by my bed. It doesn't seem to be a problem, and if I have to get up with any of the dogs, I take the time to have a pee and a drink myself. Guess that's what middle age is all about LOL.
I don't think it's good if he's really thirsty. I'm guessing he seems fine otherwise so he doesn't have any health concerns. Maybe you could just give him a small amount. I know how uncomfortable I feel if my throat is really dry and I think all of us animals should have free access to water. Calla might sleep later if I restricted her evening water but she seems to need it and I let her drink until she goes into her crate. We may or may not go out again after that but she's still up earlier than I'd prefer, either way.
Rosco had this problem for a very very very long time. We did everything we could but nothing worked unless we took up water 2-3 hours before bedtime. Sucked for Cass because she was used to drinking at any time at night...but she also had a bladder of steel and Rosco has a bladder the size of a grape. Thule had no issues. I remember trying to think of ways to get him to drink more in the day time (since he tends to suck face with his water bowl at night and ignore it during the day) and even diluted the juice from a can of tuna with lots of water to get him to drink lots in the day..but that was kind of a pain to do regularly. Nothing 'ultimately worked' except it seems now at the age of almost 4 years he seems to have normalized his drinking or grown a real man's bladder ;-) If we go out at night for possibly more than 2 hours...we take up water bowls 'just in case'. And if we hear/see him making out with his water bowl in the late evening, we also tend to call him away from it.
I stop filling Guinness's water bowl about an hour after he has his dinner (around 6:30 PM). Later in the afternoon I give him ice cubes in his bowl to get him to hydrate well so that he won't miss the water later. He loves ice cubes, so that works better for us than just leaving water for him. I take him out at 10:00 and he's good until 7:00 the next morning. He's never cried for more water, but I think I'm too much of a "softie" not to give it to him if he's crying.
I don't take Peri's water up anymore. But, we go outside at 10pm for our last walk, and then she sleeps in our room on her bed - her water bowl is not in our room. So essentially, she does not have water from 10pm to 6am every night. She never needs to go out in the middle of the night.
We leave water down all night for our girls. We had trouble with them sleeping through the night, sometimes wanting out 2-3 times. They would always potty. I did remove water at one point and then they wanted a drink when they came in from outside. So I just put the bowl back down. One night, who knows why, I just yelled (they are on other side of the house in their room) "Go Back to Sleep". Low and behold they did and have been sleeping through the night ever since. If I hear a bark in the middle of the night, I just again tell them to go back to sleep. We haven't gone out to potty during the night for several months now! They potty at 9:00 pm and I get up with them through the week at 5:15 am, but on the week-end the will sleep till I get up even if it is 7:30 or 8:00.
I think he will get used to it....it just takes a while for dogs to get into a routine and then they don't like deviating from it, you know? Christmas break messed up Peri and Taquito both. They are just now getting back into our routine and I think they like it. Noah will get accustomed to no water when it is "bedtime".
I don't take away Fozzy's water but I don't refill it after 8:00-9:00, and he goes out for the last time around 10-10:30. He stays in my room at night and doesn't seem to look for water after bedtime. I don't usually let him out til I am showered ~ around 5:30 am.
During the week I cut zack off at 8:00 and his last trip out is at 10:00. He makes it fine during the night. He likes his ice cubes and I have caught him dispensing ice from the refrig. That is quite the site.
