Hello,
I suspect my doodle has allergies. She has been coughing for 7 weeks. SHe is 5 months old. She had cochcidia when we got her (I didn't know) and was very ill for weeks. During the time we were treating her for that and trying to get her on dog food, she began this cough. They thought it was kennel cough (though I had not had her anywhere) and put her on more antibiotics. This poor little thing has lived 3 of her 5 months on drugs. They are wanting to scope her and do chest/neck head x-rays. We are now seeing relief on antihistamines they prescribed for me but I am trying to find out what she can be allergic to. I thought food perhaps and we are changing that over to the Wellness fish and sweet potato . Other people say dogs don't cough from allergies. It is a long story, but we have been through a ton ($$$ and lack of sleep and worry) so if anyone can help, I would really appreciate it! She is growing and active and happy except for the cough! It is all in her throat. Lungs are clear. And it is mostly at night. She coughs until I'm afraid she is going to aspirate, or she throws up. Any thoughts for me??
Thank you,
Fergie's desperate mom.
Charlene, I'm so sorry your doodle is going through this.
The symptoms you are describing are not allergy symptoms. With any kind of allergy, dogs experience it as intense itching and skin infections. This is true of "hay fever" type allergies such as allergies to ragweed and other pollens as well as food allergies. In addition, it takes at least six months of exposure to a particular food for a dog to develop and allergy to it.
We have a lot of discussions on allergies in dogs here on DK...check the Health & Medical Issues Group, the Food Group, and the main forum. I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that what you are describing has nothing to do with any type of allergy.
I can't understand why your vets can't give you any idea of what this might be. It sounds like bordatella, but if they're sure it's not, could it be it possibly be some type of canine flu virus?
I have had blood tests done, twice. The blood work comes back normal. It has both times. She has no temp. and is full of energy. She runs and plays outside in the snow, and never coughs. She goes to bed that night, and coughs her head off. I can get her spayed in a month, so I think I am going to wait to do x-rays while she is already out. I sound selfish now, but I don't want to spend 110.00 on xrays now and then spend the 240.00 to have her spayed and a hernia repaired.
I did contact the breeder. She has been great. She had called her vet and talked with my vet. Her husband lost his job, so I can't ask her to help with the hernia (umbilical) repair. She has offered to take her back and let me get another but??????? I cannot take her anywhere, she belongs with us!
I know nothing about the respiratory issues but I can tell you that when Charli was spayed, they fixed the umbilical hernia at the same time. I don't know your situation but I just wanted to share that.
BTW - that hernia literally saved Charli's life!! The Amish Puppy Mill she was born into surrendered her to a rescue (a miracle in itself) because she was no good to a pet store. Lucky for me!!
I know I can get a referral to MSU but I can't afford that. I have sunk coles to 1500 into her in 3 months. My hsuband is very patient and understanding but is running out!
Do you have a large Veterinary School/ hospital in your area? These University hospitals usually have specialists and have the expertise and equipment and testing capabilities that local vets do no have. I would try this.
Yes, MSU is about 150 miles away. However, I don't have an extra $460 laying around right now! That is what I was quoted it would cost for the visit/tests...
Does she sleep on down feather stuff? Do you use scented detergent? Febreze? Any air fresheners, scented candles? Have you tried changing her bedding completely and the room she sleeps in? Did the problem get worse when the weather shifted and you closed all your windows?
