Dear DK Obiedience Family!
I have an 8 month old male Doodle who I need some advice and help in dealing with his fear of cars. I had Bailey to Beg. OB classes in Oct/Nov....he did awesome! At that time he was just about 6 months old. I decided that while I was training to "heal" I'd take him out on the roads for walks..I had been only walking him out on our 13 acres with trails. As I started on my walk on the road Bailey immediately had a fear of the cars...the noise and how fast they were going. (His reaction was one of running away from the cars and getting close to the ground..basically "scared to death") I have never dealt with this issue in any of my dogs before..so I appreciate any advise. After this experience on the road he shows fear of cars..even sitting still cars! He does not want to go into my car either. I just started the Beg. Novice OB training and just the drive to the dog club in the car gets him very anxious...not a good start to training! He has just turned 8 months old...thanks so much!
In my opinion I think he'll do best conquering a fear AFTER he's otherwise excellent at Novice Obedience. I would finish the class first. BUT...eventually you'll need to have him around cars..so...start easy with heeling, etc as far from cars as he needs to be. Next day a foot closer...if he does well...try closer the next time. Ever so gradually work your way near a stopped car. But it has to be done incrementally so he's not thrown into the fire so to speak.
