Today I went to the pet store near me to purchase one of those inflatable collars for Oliver. Instead the sales person there showed me what they call the Comfy Cone. It is soft and closes with velcro, and fits on to a regular collar. I took him with me and they put it on him and what a difference from that awful hard plastic collar. it is soft, but he can't puncture it, and he can eat and drink with little or no problem. He fought it for a minute, but then just calmed down, was walking around with it, was fine in the car coming home and when we got home, he drank some water and is now taking his afternoon nap...AND he can't get to the paw. I bought the evening primrose oil, so I will use that when I take the sock off later. He hasn't been pulling at it, well he can't now, but he isn't even trying. Ira and I put sone meds on it this morning and covered it with a non stick pad and then soft ace and some tape and the sock. Tonight I will take it off and just use the primrose oil on it if it looks as good as it did this am. But I think he is just used to going after the foot, and hopefully if he is not iching and he can't get to the paw we will have broken the cycle...Thanks all for all the help and support. You guys are the best...Love from Mom & Oliver...

Cheryl, the primrose oil is to be taken internally, it is not to be used topically! It is an essential fatty acid supplement that helps ease inflammations, dry skin, and itching on a celleular level through ingestion! Don't put it on the foot! The EPO takes a couple of weeks to start showing results.
If you need to put something on Oliver's foot, use a cortisone anti-itch spray or cream. I personally prefer the sprays to the ointments because they dry quickly and don't leave the fur greasy.
If I would learn to read what I write, I would be ahead of the game. I meant that I am going to start the pills tonight, and use the cortizone spray on the foot...It looks so much better today...And the new collar thing is doing its job and he is not freaking out...I am losing it, lol, sry if I scared you, I really am not that ditzy....Cheryl
LOL! Just call me "Mom"! I worry about everything!
and I am a nurse to boot, lol, so u would think I would be able to think clearly and not worry about every little thing, but I do and I always did with my human kids too...
I hope his foot heals soon!
thank you, I hope so too, and he is doing better today..
We bought one of those soft cones for Chewie when he got neutered...he liked it soooo much better.
there isn't even a comparison between them, he is not in love with the soft one either, but he doesn't fight it, so I am thrilled.. I will keep it on him for 2 more days and make sure the paw is good, and then I will see what happens when I take it off..
I know the EPO needs some time to work but with Gordie is was only days. He must have been soooooo deficient in fatty acids even though we had been using another supplement that supposedly had Omegas.
