I see the difference in the background. I keep flipping from one the the other and I think that the f22 one is sharper on the doodle but they both are so good.
After heroic efforts I managed to change the aperture, have a doodle patient enough to pose and consider returning the d... camera. Here's Luca!
F5.6
F22 All else the same
Clearly adjusting the exposure time would have helped but I think confused the issue. So one is relatively sharp foreground & mid range, and background is visible and under exposed. The first has a relatively clear foreground only and is overexposed.
Lesson learned, you need to change more than just the aperture : )
Actually, the first pic is very nice doesn't really look over exposed to me--so much of photography is in the eye of the beholder!! I agree that the second is underexposed.
. . . Now my problem was when I shot the second pic with a smaller aperture, my shutter remained open longer to compensate and as a result, my images blurred from camera shake because the shutter speed had to be slower than the image stabilization could accomodate -- does that make any sense? So, I have to do my assignment in adequate lighting becase the only flash I have is the one built into my camera which is not enough for like f18 or more in low light . . .

Maybe you could have upped the ISO on your camera to compensate for lower light.
