Can someone please tell me the difference between the Les Poochs Green and Purple brushes? I know green is supposed to be Medium and purple is supposed to be Firm. What does that mean? Is the firm going to be rougher on the skin? How do you decide what brush is right for you if you don't have access to them to try them out first? On the Les Pooch site it says Green is for poodles and Purple is for golden retrievers....When you have a goldendoodle...which do you choose?
Start with one brush - the ONE you think will be best. Get another as you need it. We started with the small green for Ned and just purchased the purple (still small) for him because I feel that the green just isn't doing it now that his coat is so thick and long. He is almost two now so you don't need to start with everything. I have a purple (don't know if the color means anything) flexible slicker with bent tines on one side and straight on the other. The brand is MGT and it cost less than $20 dollars. It works just fine - just not quite as good as LesPouchs. What I don't like is the side with straight tines - useless for Ned's coat. You do need a steel comb with graduated teeth.
Yes - both. I started with the green LesPouchs. Then I saw the MGT one on PetEDge or one of those sites and I needed a second brush for our RV. Ned mats and I can't be without a brush and comb for him. If I forgot to pack it, I would be in a real pickle because the flexible and bent tine brushes can't be picked up at the neighborhood campground store. I only paid about $12 dollars for it about a year ago. It works just fine - it is stiffer than the green LesPouchs so maybe the purple is universal for stiffer. Recently my green LesPouchs just wasn't getting down to the skin so I I e-mailed Kemp of DoodleCountry Store. He suggested the firmer LesPouchs. It may be just the same as the MGT one. I never thought to check my motorhome brush (DUH). But for my regular brush I want one with the bent tines on BOTH sides anyway. If it doesn't matter to you, try the MGT one first and save some money.
I have only brushed Ned once with the purple Les Pouchs so I don't really know how Ned feels, but I think he is fine with it. My husband and I have this different routine for brushing Ned = Ned hates to be brushed so in order for him to be still enough for me to thoroughly brush, my husband snuggles and cuddles him on his lap while I brush. Sometimes this takes about 40 to 75 minutes and Ned usually sleeps for most of it - which he did for the one grooming. I had this rake with rotating teeth that I thought would be wonderful and faster - Ned cried when I used it - so if the purple brush hurt him I would probably know with the first groom.
Update: I gave Peri her first big brushing since being cut shorter (1 1/2" right now) and she did NOT LIKE the purple LP brush at all. I think it is too hard on her. For now I am going to use the comb while she is shorter. She doesn't seem to mind it and it does the trick.
Now that I have used both a bit. The purple is a lot firmer! I am not sure that it does any better than the green for my purposes. The green wasn't getting all way through Ned's coat, but I don't think the purple one is either. I use the comb as much as I can either way, so...... Trevordoodle only start with one. I am not where I can click on your picture to see your guys coat. Ned is fairly curly but fleece not wool.
Well, I ordered the purple...
I like it and it works much better than the generic slicker I have. It pulls less hair out.
It takes some time getting used to though. I cant just brush my doodles hair in long motions like I would my own hair. Its like a tap and pull movement. I think the purple may be a little too firm for general brushing but it is good for removing mats.
Maybe, I will order the green for general brushing....These doodles sure do get expensive...lol !
Last night I gave Ned a really thorough grooming and the purple brush did make a difference. I still used the green one on his tummy and some other places, but I never would have gotten the green brush down the coat on his back. When I can, I comb and skip the brush. I hate his poofy look so I make sure to spray him when I am done. Trevordoodle, long strokes don't word for our doodles do they?
OR you can use the steel comb for general brushing. Peri doesn't mind it - I have been using the comb on her since she is a little shorter right now. And it is better on her belly area....
Interestingly enough, I have to use the brush (gently) before I comb the belly because Ned's belly is a bit tangled and the brush kind of "breaks up" the tangles or the comb pulls.
Oh belly tangles and mats I don't even deal with. I just carefully cut them out with scissors. Especially those tiny fine hairs that look like those knots we used to make on our arms...anyone remember those? You would bend your arm and then rub in a circle really hard and fast with your palm right where the forearm connects to the upper arm. What were we thinking????? Nancy, you are a California beach girl...you must have done it!!
