Noah found an owl pellet at the field today and had a great time rolling on it.  Since his coat is so thick and curly, every tiny piece of feather stuck to his coat.  He looked quite pleased with himself but I had the horrible task of picking all the feathers off of him.

Why do dogs insist on rolling in the dirtiest things they find?  I've heard it's some sort of defense mechanism to cover up their own scent.  Any other ideas?

LOL- doesn't say much for the aroma of Clark's feet!
oh and i forgot: earthworms!
There is a homeless man who poops outside of the backdoor of our office (there's a security camera though, and there's mistaking what's happening out there), so human poop isn't outside the realm in a park!
As an owner of a wooly coated doodle, I feel your pain. I don't understand why they take such delight in the dirty roll. (If it's something more than animal pooh or dung it's labeled a skanky roll). I live in NYC and out of courtesy, my dog does his business off the curb. While leashed, he once rolled in dead rats (guts) that had been run over by cars. It looked like a special effects artist had prepared him for a B Movie. The clean up was just awful.Itwas far the most disgusting think he's done and he was as pleased as ever.
Dead squirrel that was squished by numerous cars.

Buffy rolled in a very dead stingray once - yuk! We had to drive home with all the car windows open.
ALL is gross but my Mini Golden Doodle has discovered deer pellets (poop) and decided that after rolling in it she would devour them too. She heads for all my pine trees to seek them out. However, after eating those disgusting morsels she got so sick-both ends that I now keep a very close eye on her when we are outside.
Goose poop..........for whatever reason they love it!! A close second......horse poop!
dead, plain, rotting blindworm/slowworm
Thank goodness Sunny hasn't discovered this pleasure!
Oh gross. Lola rolls in everything, so I usually take a whiff after a walk, or a romp in the park. If I smell poo, she gets a bath. Why do they insist on rolling in disgusting piles of stuff????
Rabbit poop ><
