This morning I was looking at PetFinder and I saw this "Poodle Mix" just rescued from a high kill shelter. She is two years old and sounds wonderful. She's 15 pounds, so just Guinness's size. She was badly neglected and had to be totally shaved. I fell in love with her already. So, I'm thinking Guinness might want a "big sister". He loves other dogs, so I don't think it would be a big transition for him. Before I go any further with this what are the objective things I should be considering? Right now I know I'm thinking with my heart...not my head. Please DK friends, help me to think this through objectively. Here's her picture....is she a doodle? Her name is Isabelle, but I'd call her Izzy.
To answer some of the questions here about her, yes she is in a foster home; this rescue does not have a shelter and houses all their dogs with fosters. Since most foster homes have dogs of their own, it will be easy to find out how she is with other dogs; although once a dog understands that they are home for good, their behavior is often quite different than when they are the 'guest' in the home of another dog.
Jane, if you're interested, I'd act quickly. This kind of dog in my area would be adopted within hours. Young, small, female, non-shedding, housebroken, reliable uncrated in the house...this is what lots of people are looking for!
I did email first thing this morning saying we are interested, but I haven't heard anything yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I think she would be perfect for us, and I think it would make Guinness happy. Do you think cockapoo also?
I do see some cocker in her face, but I also think it's possible that she's a schnoodle...which happens to be my own favorite poodle-mix. I know the ears are low, but I had a larger schnoodle who looked a lot like that. In the "before" photo, she looks like a malti-poo, but not in the shaved photos.
I don't think it matters, anyway. She can be whatever you want her to be, lol.
Are you ready to start doubling recipes?
I'm ready! The Question is....Is Guinness ready? He's used to being an only Doodle, and he's a little spoiled (I know that's hard to believe). You make a really good point about how the two will get along once the both realize this is permanent. I think initially Guinness will love having someone to "hang out with", especially at first. He loves it when my daughter or brother bring their dogs...but they go home after a few hours. I just hope that the novelty doesn't wear off when he sees that he's having to share me.
That's what's always kept me from getting another dog permanently. Jack likes having another dog around to play with for a while, and then he wants them to go home. I think it's easier if the older dog isn't five and so set in his ways, though. I also think that as time goes by, they adjust. I actually think Jack missed Molly for a couple of days after she went to her new home...at least, he missed their nightly tug-of-war games. He never played that with anyone else.
I think you need to meet her and see what your heart & your gut tell you. If it feels right to you, it will end up being right for Guinness, too.
She even looks adorable shaved down! When I saw the shaved pic I jumped out Cocker Spaniel to me, but I know basically nothing about dogs, just what she looked like. It is so sad that to teach the teenager a lesson the mother was willing to have a dog killed .... how awful! She is adorable and I certainly hope it works out for you guys if you decide that is what you want. We could make her an honorary doodle!
So now I'm obsessing. I want her forever home to be here! I hate to be a pest, but I think I'm going to send a follow-up email since I didn't hear anything today. I'm through with objectivity....it's overrated anyway. Karen says "meet her" and go with my gut and heart, and that's sounding like a plan. Okay, I'm going to do it. Follow-up email is on its way. Thanks everyone. Tomorrow I may be out buying lots more dog "stuff". This time I can get pink flowers! Oh, my poor DH.
She is so cute Jane!! I think you should do as Karen says and go with your gut. Is there a number you could call?---ok, I see there is no phone number. I really hope that you find out something soon! I would send the second email!
