Hello

Apologies if there is already a discussion on the subject.  Ted has now been with us 54 hours, for the last 17hours is stools have been becoming softer (now like melted icecream).    I have not given him his last meal (last poo was just before meal was due).

Any other suggestions for the next few hours?  When should I seek a vet?

Thank you

Feed him--don't hold off on food, make sure he has water, and take a stool sample to the vet. If your appointment is not until Monday for his new puppy visit, take the stool sample anyway.

All puppies have worms and may have to be treated several times to clear these out of the system. Our puppy had several cases and each time different types until these all cleared the system.

Don't worry, most of us have been through this with our puppies. Good Luck and Congratulations.
Just a thought...Have you changed the food he ate before he came to you? Perhaps he's just not used to the change either in food or new location. Did he travel to you or did you pick him up? Just some thoughts. Congratulations!!!
I feel your pain. I have a 1 year old and an almost 2 year old that have both had EXPLOSIVE diarreah for the last 5 days!! I changed their diet to a bland higher fiber diet including boiled chicken, rice, and sweet potatos. I've tried charcoal pills. Still nothing has helped. I took them to the vet this morning (I have been consulting with the vet on the phone since Wednesday when they'd been having diarreah for 48 hours) and they found nothing but did give them both a shot and some meds as well as an intestinal diet food for the next two days. They found nothing in their fecal samples so we're not really sure what caused it, but I would say go ahead and call or go to your vet because this is for the birds!!! Again, I feel your pain. Hope your Ted feels better.
Is he eating the same food that he had before you got him? A change in diet can cause problems. When we first got Leo he had a little bit of the runs but not bad. Also canned pumpkin works wonders. All three of my dogs love it! Good luck! I know this can be scary. It's up to you and your comfort level, but just calling the vet couldn't hurt.
I forgot about diet changes. Duh me! You can tell I haven't had a puppy in a year.
I agree with all the suggestions, and know the canned pumpkin works. You can just put some on top of the food. I've used twice now for my Lucy and she was back to normal within a day.
Thanks for replies. It's definitely the same make of food that he was having at breeders. Have just emailed to ask whether it is the same flavour.
We picked him up in the car. It was an hours journey (in which my husband ran into the back of someone - doh!). But he has been quite brill. Interested in everyone, playing nicely, responding to sit and come.

I've never seen canned pumpkin - I wonder whether we have it in the UK?!
My pup did this after a few days at our house and even though she was tested for parasites, they retested a more thorough one and she had two types, so was put on medication. But prior to going to the Vet, people told me to give her a tablespoon of pure pumpkin puree. Not the spiced one, but just pumpkin. I did not notice it helping, but I'm sure that's because she had the parasites. Once on the medicine, it cleared up within 24 hours. You could try this in case it's just an upset tummy. Did you change her food from what he was used to?
Breeder says it is the same flavour. But he did steal some adult food just before we picked him up (would have thought that might have moved through is system a bit quicker).

She has suggested tha change of environment. He seems happy and is still playing and was full of beans til he crashed while I was doing the kids bedtime story. Maybe I will call the vet and see if I can get any pumpkin (don't fancy my chances).
Allie had diarrhea for the first few days. I did take her to the vet and here is an idea someone gave me before I went to the vet. To get a stool sample, I took a ziploc bag (inside out) and used it to pick up the stool sample. Then I just flipped the ziploc bag around and zipped it back up. This way the vet did not have to stick the (pooper scooper) tool in her behind. That was the nicest way I can think of saying it. My vet then put Allie on some medication and all was well after that. I did notice later that she does tend to get diarrhea when she has a bully stick. So no more bully sticks for her. I am about to try deer antlers. I guess just be careful of treats you give him at this time until he gets used to everything. I have heard to use his food as a treat until everything settles down. Good luck.
Some dogs just have sensitive tummies. When Beck was little, he would get the runs from bully sticks, marrow bones, even too many dried liver treats..He's 13 months now and is doing much better, but if we feed him beef he gets gas or the runs or both..
