Green Bay Man Files Complaint After Police Shoot Pet
Police Reviewing Case
Posted: 3:01 pm CST February 25,2010

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- A Green Bay man has filed a complaint after police shot and killed his family's runaway dog.

The Hawley family's dog Dudley was recently spotted by a passerby between a fence and Highway 43 about a week after the Labradoodle ran away.

A police report said officers spent more than an hour trying to capture the dog, using a snare pole, food, pepper spray, even a Taser gun before they shot Dudley four times with a rifle. Officers were concerned the dog would wind up on the busy Leo Frigo Bridge and cause a crash.

Ray Hawley said if police had checked their reports, officers would have found out that he reported the dog missing. Hawley said he could have picked up the dog had police placed a simple phone call.

So now, if a dog bolts or gets out somehow, you not only have to worry about him being hit by a car, you have to worry about him being shot to death. They came after this lost frightened doodle with pepper spray, snare poles, and tasers? Gee I wonder why he wouldn't come to them? They had to shoot him four times?

I am sick over this. I really hope that there is some kind of consequence.

I heard about this last night on our local news. It truly made me ill! I don't know how in the world it can be justified! Just Horrible!!
Absolutely disgusting! SO sad!
That is absolutely horrible.
I am still having a very difficult time with this story. I can only imagine what poor Dudley's family is going through.

Doods are excellent judges of character. Dudley paid dearly for that.
I can't even imagine what Dudley's family must be going through. First of all, he had been missing for a week. They must have been frantic. Then to have him shot four times with a rifle....sickening. I certainly hope this investigation will result in action being taken against this officer. It also reminds me about how careful we need to be with our dogs to keep them safe....tags, microchips, reliable fences, and a solid recall.
This is the most disgusting inhumane thing I've read in a long time! I hope that there are serious consequences. I think the owner should try to press charges. I would be doing everything possible to make sure people were losing their jobs over this! Poor poor Dudley. :(
I would press charges or have my husband try to sue the pants off the city. Makes me totally sick.
I'm with you Allyson! We need to make sure something happens for this family. I can't imagine how they must feel.
Here's a link to a more in-depth article about this outrageous tragedy, with a photo of Dudley:

OMG! This is just awful. And then the police wonder why the general public distrusts them. What idiots!
That's so upsetting. There's no making up the loss of Dudley, but I hope the Hawleys end up with some sort of justice. (I know the officer can't be shot in an "eye for an eye" kind of thing, but maybe the family could spray pepper spray in his face and tase his privates). (I swear I don't need anger managent classes y'all - it just upsets me so much when people are stupid and it affects dogs)
I've contacted the Director of the Wisconsin Humane Society, to see what can be done in terms of making our voices heard on this. I know you will all join in.
